Limit flying, do not drink alcohol to help reduce nasal irritation, use a humidifier to thin mucus that causes sinus congestion.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses next to the nose, causing fluid or mucus to accumulate inside, creating conditions for bacteria to grow, leading to infection. If the disease is not treated promptly and properly, it can easily lead to complications such as eye socket infection, brain abscess, meningitis... Below are some things that people with sinusitis should pay attention to in order to control symptoms.

Should

Going to school, going to work : Sinusitis is not contagious to colleagues through contact. Patients can go to work, go to school normally when their health is stable.

Use nasal sprays properly : Nasal sprays clear up stuffy noses and reduce congestion. However, they should not be used continuously or for a long time. You should consult your doctor about how to use them, the type of medicine, and the appropriate dosage to avoid making symptoms worse.

Stay hydrated : Drink plenty of water when you have sinusitis to replenish moisture, thin mucus, reduce nasal congestion, and reduce sinus pressure due to congestion. Patients can drink filtered water, warm tea, fruit juice, or broth or soup.

Warm compress : Moist heat helps relieve sinus pressure, clear blocked nasal passages, and relieve pain. Use a towel soaked in warm water, apply to the face for 5-10 minutes, can be done several times a day.

Use a humidifier : Moisture from water thins mucus and prevents congestion. Be sure to use clean water and wash the bottle every day to avoid mold and bacteria. You can use a warm shower to steam your nose when bathing, or steam with a bowl of hot water (for adults).

Nasal irrigation : Patients should regularly rinse their nose with saline solution to clean the sinuses.

Should not

Limit flying : The difference in air pressure when flying increases the risk of earache and complications. If flying, patients should yawn and swallow saliva frequently, especially during takeoff and landing. Other methods such as pinching the nostrils, closing the mouth, and gently blowing the nose can also reduce pressure on the nose and sinuses.

Avoid alcohol : People with sinusitis should avoid alcohol because it can easily dehydrate them. Alcoholic beverages can also irritate the sinuses and nasal mucosa, leading to swelling, making symptoms worse.

Avoid swimming pools : Chlorine in swimming pools can irritate your nasal passages, causing sinus symptoms to flare up. Instead of swimming in a pool, you can choose other exercises such as jogging, walking, cycling.

Avoid polluted air : Avoid areas with high levels of air pollution and cigarette smoke to prevent sinusitis from recurring.
