Russia surpassed France in arms exports for the first time?

The arms export positions of the US and Russia as above were given in a report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI, Sweden) today, March 11, according to Reuters.

"The United States has increased its global role as an arms supplier, a key aspect of its foreign policy, exporting weapons to more countries than ever before," SIPRI said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Russia's arms exports in 2019-2023 fell by 53% compared to 2014-2018. The decline accelerated over this period, and Russia's arms exports in 2023 were 52% lower than in 2022.

The T-14 Armata is said to be Russia's most modern tank.

“The low number of major arms shipments awaiting delivery from Russia suggests that the country’s arms exports are likely to remain well below the levels achieved in 2014-2018, at least in the short term,” SIPRI said.

Russia's falling arms exports have pushed France past Russia to become the world's second-largest arms exporter after the United States for the first time since data collection began in 1950, according to SIPRI.

French arms exports grew by 47%, and the country accounted for 11% of total global arms exports between 2019 and 2023, according to AFP. SIPRI researcher Katarina Djokic noted that France has been particularly successful in selling its Rafale fighter jets outside Europe.

Meanwhile, European countries' arms imports increased by 94% in 2019-2023 compared to 2014-2018. Of which, Ukraine was the world's fourth largest importer in 2019-2023, after at least 30 countries provided military aid to Ukraine since February 2022, according to SIPRI.

Also according to SIPRI, global shipments of major international weapons, such as aircraft, large warships, artillery, surface-to-air missiles and tanks, decreased slightly by 3.3% between 2014-2018 and 2019-2023.
