According to AP, this could be considered the first time Ukraine has fired long-range missiles into Russian territory since the start of the conflict in 2022.
Kyiv's deployment of ATACMS comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin lowers the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons. This move opens the possibility that Moscow could retaliate with nuclear weapons even if attacked with conventional weapons by any country supported by a nuclear power.
If the attack is confirmed, it could be a worrying escalation, especially after the US administration recently gave Kyiv the "green light" to use US-supplied long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory.
Also on November 19, Ukraine announced an attack on a military weapons depot in Bryansk at midnight, although it did not disclose the specific weapons used. The Ukrainian General Staff said that multiple large explosions and a chain reaction of explosions could be heard in the target area, near Karachev.

Ukrainian forces are under immense pressure from Russia on the battlefield at several points along a 1,000-kilometer-long front line, stretching their military resources. Furthermore, they continue to face relentless Russian drone and missile attacks.
In a statement published by Russian news agencies, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that its military shot down five ATACMS missiles and damaged another. Debris landed on an unspecified military facility. The debris caused a fire, but there were no casualties or damage.
Karachev is located approximately 115 km from the Russian-Ukrainian border. During the conflict, Ukraine repeatedly advanced deeper into Russian territory, but primarily using drones rather than missiles. Russian officials have revealed interceptions of Ukrainian drones near Moscow – about 500 km from the border – and most recently in Izhevsk, a city about 1,450 km from the border.
In a related development, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that the Russian Air Force had conducted glide bombing raids using Su-34 aircraft against Ukrainian forces' positions in Kursk.

" The crew of a Su-34 multirole supersonic fighter-bomber of the Aerospace Forces carried out an attack on personnel, military armored vehicles and positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk border region ," the Russian Ministry of Defense stated.
The attack was carried out targeting pre-identified reconnaissance targets, using aerial bombs equipped with multi-purpose programmable and adjustable modules. Russian intelligence confirmed that the attacks struck Ukrainian Armed Forces forces, military equipment, and positions.
