Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the missile landed near Bila Tserkva, a town 80km south of the capital Kyiv.

In total, Russia launched 600 drones and 90 missiles into Ukraine last night, 604 of which were shot down by enemy air defenses. Foreign Minister Sybiha described it as "one of the biggest attacks" on the capital.

According to Ukraine's emergency services, at least 87 people were injured in the attacks in Kyiv. "Unfortunately, not all ballistic missiles were shot down. Kyiv suffered the most damage and Kyiv was the main target of this Russian attack," Zelensky said.

While sheltering from Russian retaliation at a Kyiv subway station in the early morning of May 24, Nataliia Zvarych recounted a "terrifying" night.

“We were right under the explosions, we saw things flying everywhere in the air. It was terrifying, frightening. We’ve been sitting here for over three hours, listening to the explosions up there,” Zvarych told Reuters, condemning the Russian attack as “horrific.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha further informed that the missile launched carried a dummy warhead. “Moscow’s alleged use of the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile – a system designed to carry nuclear warheads – is a tactic of intimidation and a reckless act that pushes the nuclear balance,” stated EU High Commissioner for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas in a post on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned last night's Russian attack, saying the use of Oreshnik missiles marked an "escalation" in "Russia's special military operation."

The US classifies the Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying multiple conventional or nuclear warheads, as a medium-range missile. Its speed and trajectory make it nearly impossible for many of Ukraine's existing air defense systems to intercept. This is only the third time Russia has used this type of missile.

The attack on the capital Kyiv last night came after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered retaliation for the attack in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine. Putin accused Ukraine of committing an act of "terrorism" by using drones to attack university dormitories in Starobilsk.
