According to Tass, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergey Naryshkin said that France is preparing to send 2,000 troops to Ukraine.
According to Mr. Naryshkin, Russia has information that a contingent of troops to be sent to Ukraine is being prepared, initially consisting of about 2,000 troops. According to the SVR director, the French military is concerned that such a large number of troops cannot be mobilized and stationed in Ukraine without being noticed.
After a conference on Ukraine in Paris in February, French President Emmanuel Macron did not rule out sending Western troops to the war zone in Ukraine. Mr Macron also pledged that Western countries would "do what is necessary" to deter Russia in the conflict.
Naryshkin’s unverified claims came on the same day as an announcement by General Pierre Schill, chief of staff of the French land forces. General Schill said the French military was ready for “the most difficult engagements.” Schill did not specifically mention the conflict in Ukraine but said that “the sources of the crisis are multiplying and there is a risk of escalation or widening the conflict.”
France could assemble a 20,000-strong division within 30 days and command an army of about 60,000 troops from other allied nations, General Schill added. The French army claims to have 121,000 troops and can call up 24,000 reservists.
