Russia, Türkiye and Iran, partners in the Astana Format since 2017, will meet to seek an end to the civil war in Syria, even while backing opposing sides on the battlefield.
While Russia and Iran provide military support to President Bashar Al-Assad's government, Turkey backs rebel groups.
With a 900km border and hosting nearly 3 million Syrian refugees, Türkiye has a key role to play in stabilizing the situation. President Erdogan has recently called on his counterpart Assad to reconcile with his people, but Damascus has demanded that Ankara withdraw its troops from northwestern Syria before negotiations can begin.
According to experts, Türkiye's top priority is to establish a safe zone for Syrian refugees to return home, while preventing the rise of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization and Kurdish forces.
Meanwhile, the New York Times (NYT) reported that Iran has begun evacuating diplomatic staff and military advisers from Syria, including some members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) moving to Lebanon and Iraq.
According to the NYT, some Iranian diplomats and their families returned to Tehran by air, while others traveled by land to Lebanon, Iraq and the Syrian port of Latakia.
The move came after US President Joe Biden informed Congress that he had twice ordered strikes on IRGC targets in Syria in November, targeting the force's headquarters, command centers and weapons depots.
