In an interview on Channel One , Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that Moscow and Washington are negotiating the Nord Stream pipeline system.

According to Mr. Lavrov, despite many disagreements, restoring a stable energy supply to Europe is not only in the interests of Russia and the United States, but also has a profound impact on the entire region.

The statement suggests a shift in Western energy policy, especially given that energy prices in Europe are several times higher than in the world's largest economy.

Although Russia and the US are discussing Nord Stream, the European Union (EU) still maintains a tough stance in refusing to use Russian gas.

European Commission (EC) spokesperson for climate action and energy Anna-Kaisa Itkonen affirmed that resuming the Nord Stream project is not in the interests of the 27-member bloc.

“This project does not help diversify the bloc's energy supplies,” said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen.

The German Economy Ministry also stressed that the country has no plans to negotiate with Russia on the restoration of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

"Independence from Russian gas is of strategic importance for Germany in terms of security policy," the statement from Berlin said.

The Nord Stream pipeline system has a history spanning decades.

Since the 1990s, Russian gas corporation Gazprom has researched and developed this project to directly supply gas to Central Europe without going through Ukraine, Belarus or Poland.

By 2000, the EC approved a preliminary design, laying the foundations for a transcontinental energy supply system.

Nord Stream 1 was completed in 2012 with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, supplying large amounts of gas to Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
