Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of many countries, including Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, attended the parade.

Speaking at the parade, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after sending congratulations to Russian soldiers and people on the occasion of the country's great holiday, emphasized that human civilization today is facing a major turning point. Russia is facing a real war, but Russia has enough strength and resources to ensure national security.

“We want to see a peaceful and stable future,” the Russian President stressed.

Mr. V. Putin affirmed that the victory over fascism was largely due to the blood and sweat of the Soviet army and people, and that denying or erasing the sacrifices and achievements of the Soviet Union in World War II is a crime.

“We are faithful to the teachings of our ancestors and understand their sacrifices and losses for today,” the Russian President said.

During his speech, the Russian President and delegates observed a minute of silence to commemorate the victims and soldiers who died in the Great Patriotic War.

Following the Russian President's speech was a commemorative parade presided over by Russian Defense Minister, Army General Sergei Shoigu, and Commander of the Ground Forces, General Oleg Salyukov.

According to information from the Russian Ministry of Defense , more than 10,000 Russian soldiers and 125 units of equipment participated in the parade.

The parade was opened by the formation of the Moscow Military Music School named after Lieutenant General VM Khalilov. It was followed by the parade of academies, schools, and military branches of the Russian Federation Armed Forces.

After the infantry parade, the traditional formation of combat vehicles entered Red Square. Leading the way were T-34 tanks and combat vehicles such as Tiger-M and BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, Boomerang infantry fighting vehicles, S-400 Triumph air defense missile systems, and RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile launchers. The units marched to the music of 40 military bands of the Russian Army and security forces.

As previously announced by Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, the air force parade will not be held, so the parade marking the 78th anniversary of the Victory Day will end with the song Pabeda (Victory) performed by the military band.

The Victory Parade took place amid tight security across the country following a series of drone attacks, two of which exploded over the Kremlin in the early morning of May 3.

At least 21 Russian cities have announced the cancellation of the parade. Moscow authorities closed Red Square for two weeks ahead of the parade and imposed a ban on the use of drones in the city's skies.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on May 8 that Russian authorities will take all necessary measures to ensure security for the parade.

About 27 million Soviet soldiers and civilians died in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) to protect the Fatherland and humanity from fascism. The war ended on May 9, 1945, when the representative of Nazi Germany signed the protocol confirming unconditional surrender before the Allied representatives in Berlin.

The Soviet Red Army held its first Victory Parade on June 24, 1945. Subsequent parades were held on May 9 in 1965, 1985, and 1990.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia resumed the Victory Parade in Moscow in 1995. Since then, the event has taken place annually on May 9. The event has only been postponed once, in 2020, when the parade was postponed to June 24 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
