Russia claims to have recaptured two villages in Kursk

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Russian armed forces have liberated the settlements of Uspenovka and Borki in the Kursk region. "The Northern Combat Group continues the offensive and liberates the settlements of Uspenovka and Borki…", the statement said.

The statement added that reconnaissance and search operations in forest areas continue to identify and destroy enemy sabotage groups trying to penetrate deep into Russian territory.

Last week, a senior Russian commander said his forces had regained control of about 10 settlements in the area. Ukraine had previously said its forces controlled about 100 villages in Kursk covering more than 1,300 square kilometers, a claim Russia denied.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking in a video address on Monday evening, said he had discussed the situation in Kursk with Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi "and every day we act according to the plan".

Mr Zelenskyy also said that General Syrskyi provided detailed information about the progress of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, especially on the railway line and the logistics center of Pokrovsk.

He said there had been 100 battles in the past 24 hours on the eastern front, with the fiercest fighting taking place in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove regions. The capture of Pokrovsk would be a step towards Russia's goal of controlling the entire Donetsk region.

President Zelenskyy said Friday that Ukraine’s Kursk offensive had slowed Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. But Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Kursk offensive had dispersed Kiev’s forces on the eastern front, weakening their defenses there.
