News organizations are competing with TikTok and other social media platforms for user attention and advertising dollars, with many looking to tap TikTok's covetedly large Gen Z audience.

Pew's analysis of Americans' news consumption, based on a survey of 8,842 U.S. adults conducted from September 25 to October 1, 2023, found that 67% of those surveyed use news websites or apps.
Facebook is the most popular social media platform for news, with 30% of Americans saying they regularly access news there, followed by YouTube at 26%, Instagram at 16% and TikTok at 14%, according to the Pew survey.
Facebook news consumption has continued despite Meta's efforts to reduce the popularity of news and other civic content on its platform in recent years, as the social network has faced regulatory pressure in key markets around the world .

Pew found that people who read news regularly on Nextdoor, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok were more likely to be women, while people who read news regularly on YouTube, Reddit, X, LinkedIn, and Google were more likely to be men.
“Women make up a larger share of regular news consumers on Nextdoor (66%), Facebook (62%), Instagram (59%), and TikTok (58%), while men make up a larger share on sites like Reddit (67%), X (62%), and YouTube (58%),” the report noted.
More than half of Americans (56%) say they usually get news from digital devices like phones, computers or tablets — up from 49% in 2022. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans who get news from other devices is TV (about 30%), print newspapers (about 10%) and radio (about 15%).
