Quang land, unforgettable years

The film about the "night before" the great spring victory in Quang Nam - Da Nang is probably the work "Victory of Nong Son - Trung Phuoc" recorded by the cameramen of Cinema Zone 5.

Vivid images: tanks rushing up the open doors, Liberation Army soldiers moving through steep, winding roads covered with barbed wire. Ammunition depots in Nong Son base exploded with a giant mushroom-shaped column of smoke rising up the hilltop. Groups of soldiers in dirty clothes, arms raised high, walking along the trenches but with cheerful faces because they had escaped death...

Mr. Nguyen Trung, former reporter of Cinema Zone V confided: “Soldiers who go to war always have guns and ammunition to fight and defend themselves. As for us war reporters, our “weapon” is just a video camera, always facing death. Without courage, we cannot complete our mission.”

During the campaign to liberate Quang Nam - Da Nang in March 1975, a powerful press force followed the troops, through battles from Tien Phuoc - Phuoc Lam - Suoi Da, liberated Tam Ky town and then quickly advanced north to join forces to enter Da Nang city.

Footage filmed during the “whirlwind” of the great spring victory, such as scenes of guns, costumes, and war vehicles abandoned by the enemy when they fled; scenes of people using motorbikes, cyclos, and even military vehicles left behind by the enemy to transport soldiers into the city; scenes of young people surrounding the liberation soldiers; scenes of self-defense forces maintaining public order... were later collected by Army Cinema in the multi-episode film “Quang Land: Unforgettable Years”.

Leave a mark on history

Many large-scale documentaries on the revolutionary war theme produced by Quang Nam Radio and Television in recent times have left an impression on viewers. “From the victory of Thuong Duc to the great victory of spring 1975”; “The victory of Tien Phuoc - Phuoc Lam, a historical milestone” are two documentaries produced by QRT recounting the period 1974-1975.

“From the victory of Thuong Duc to the great victory of spring 1975” tells about the heroic but also tragic Thuong Duc campaign. Taking place from mid-late August to November 1974, the Thuong Duc battle was the fiercest and most intense confrontation between our army and the puppet army since the Paris Agreement was signed.

Through the memories of witnesses such as Lieutenant General, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Pham Xuan The, former Deputy Commander of Regiment 66, Division 304; Colonel Ho Huu Lan - former Commander of Regiment 3, Division 324; Colonel, writer Nguyen Bao - former war correspondent of Thuong Duc; physician Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuong - Quang Da Y10 Hospital... the fierce battle in Thuong Duc is examined from many perspectives of insiders.

It was the endless regret of the commanders who underestimated the enemy, thinking that with a powerful force of heavy mortars, guided missiles... the Thuong Duc base would be reduced to ashes; it was the shock of the military doctors when they saw our army suffered too many casualties.

The documentary “From the victory of Thuong Duc to the great victory of spring 1975” shows that the price we had to pay was very high; however, with this victory, the steel door southwest of the Da Nang joint military base was opened wide.

The film "Tien Phuoc - Phuoc Lam Victory, a historical milestone" was also developed by QRT to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Quang Nam province.

From the perspective of those who directly participated in the battle, from main force soldiers, local troops to infantry battalion commanders, engineers, regimental commanders, Tien Phuoc district officials..., the film recreates quite sharply and multi-dimensionally the event of liberating Tien Phuoc - Phuoc Lam.

That is the story of Mr. Do Ngoc Xuong, former Battalion Commander of the 15th Engineer Battalion, when he commanded the unit to secretly dig trenches and pull four large cannons up to the top of Vu Em Mountain in Tien Cam. The fighting style of "pulling the cannons up high, getting close, and shooting straight" was one of the reasons why the campaign to liberate Tien Phuoc was a quick victory with very few casualties.

The film also devotes time to the battle to capture Hill 211, a peak that decided the fate of Tien Phuoc district. The story of planting the flag on Hill 211 while the enemy was still fighting back was clearly recreated by platoon leader Nguyen Chi Phong. Associated with the offensive to liberate Tien Phuoc - Phuoc Lam was a series of counterattacks in the Suoi Da area of Tam Dan commune and Tien Phong commune of Tien Phuoc district.

This is something that has received little attention in many previous stories. Witnesses' memories show that at the western gateway of Quang Tin provincial capital at that time, many fierce battles took place between our 2nd Division and the enemy's main force.

Battalion Commander Tu Ngoc Thach, a witness of the film, affirmed that when the enemy's main force suffered heavy losses at the high points and fields of Tam Dan and Tien Phong communes, the attack to liberate Tam Ky town was not too difficult, because the "protective shell" had been peeled off. That was also the reality that happened on March 24, 1975 on Tam Ky land.

Referring to the last days of March 1975 in Quang Nam, VTV8 recently had a film called “Peace Day”, made in the style of the French film Varan - that is, a film without commentary.

Through the stories of witnesses - from civilians, students to soldiers of the old regime... the film recreates the chaotic, suffocating scene of the city on the banks of the Han River before the "storm of history", and then everything bursts into joy of peace.

The film’s emotions peak when the witness, a soldier of the old regime, recounts a rather coincidental “singing to each other” between soldiers who were on both sides of the front line. Without discrimination or hatred, they sing about love, about their homeland, and tell stories of everyday life… Carrying a message about the aspirations and precious values of a peaceful life, about reconciliation… the film “Peace Day” adds a humane tone to the collection of documentaries about the day Quang Nam was completely liberated.
