On the evening of May 19th, the opening ceremony of the "2nd Da Nang Reading Culture Festival and Book-Based Storytelling Contest 2026" took place at APEC Park, with the theme "Books - Knowledge - Aspiration for National Development".

The event, organized by the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the Department of Education and Training and the Hai Chau Ward People's Committee, and implemented by the Da Nang Library, will take place from June 16-24, 2026 at Apec Park and the sidewalk of the extended Bach Dang Street in front of the park.

The 2nd Da Nang Reading Culture Festival is one of the activities in response to the 5th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2026. It is also part of a series of significant events celebrating the 51st anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification; the 72nd anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, contributing to honoring the value of books and affirming the role of reading culture in modern social life.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi An, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City, emphasized that the theme "Books - Knowledge - Aspiration for National Development" has profound significance in the current context.

According to Ms. An, books are not only repositories of knowledge but also contribute to awakening dreams, nurturing ideals, and shaping character and civic responsibility. From the pages of books, readers can gain a deeper understanding of national history, homeland traditions, inspiring examples of overcoming difficulties, and the admirable values ​​of the Vietnamese people.

"Knowledge from books doesn't just stop at reading to know, but more importantly, it's about reading to understand, to think, to live better, and to contribute more," shared Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi An.

A reading culture needs to be nurtured sustainably.

According to the leaders of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, building and developing a reading culture should not only be limited to grassroots activities but should become a regular, long-term task, linked to building a learning society and developing high-quality human resources.

Through the development of a reading culture, the city aims to cultivate a generation of Da Nang citizens who are knowledgeable, compassionate, creative, responsible to the community, and aspire to excel.

The Reading Culture Festival and the Book-Based Storytelling Contest are considered practical activities aimed at spreading a love of books and igniting a passion for reading among all segments of the population.

In particular, the Book-Based Storytelling Contest for primary school teachers in the city received a positive response. Launched at the end of April 2026, the contest attracted 32 entries.

Through stories told with emotion and creativity, many meaningful messages about love for one's homeland, compassion, resilience, and the aspiration to contribute will be more strongly disseminated to students and the public.

Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Thi Hoi An, expressed her belief that from this event, the love of books will continue to spread widely; many beautiful stories and creative ideas will be inspired, thereby helping the community to better understand the role of reading culture in the development of individuals and society.

"Developing a reading culture is an investment in people, in knowledge, and in the future of the city and the country," emphasized Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoi An.

In addition, she also argued that a reading culture cannot be built in a day or a short-term movement, but needs to be nurtured persistently through a love of books, the responsibility of families, schools, and society, along with the proactive efforts of each individual.

The event also received support from many organizations operating in the publishing and book distribution field, such as 1980s Culture and Communication Company, Tre Publishing House, Kim Dong Publishing House, Alpha Bookstore, Phuong Nam Bookstore… and many other book businesses.

The participating units offer thousands of books across diverse genres, suitable for various age groups and reading needs. Many books are offered at discounted prices to encourage greater access to reading for the public.
