Ms. Pit Thi Hien, residing in Ta Do village, Muong Tip commune, was 9 months pregnant and had a stomachache so she went to Muong Tip commune health station to give birth on July 26. However, upon arriving at the medical facility, the pain stopped and she was advised to be monitored.
By the morning of July 29, the pregnant woman was 42 weeks pregnant, with no signs of labor. Due to the effects of floods, the power system and medical equipment were not guaranteed, Muong Tip Commune Health Station decided to transfer the pregnant woman to Ky Son Health Center to give birth, and sent 2 medical staff to accompany her for support.
Ms. Vi Thi Thoa, obstetrician and pediatrician at Muong Tip Commune Health Station, said that this morning (July 29), the team left the station at 6:30 a.m. Because the road from the commune to Ky Son Health Center was severely eroded and the floodwaters were high, the team had to walk.
The pregnant woman was helped by medical staff and family members through landslides and streams, and was supported by local people by motorbike through short sections of favorable terrain.

At around 9 o'clock, when arriving at Xop Kham village (Muong Tip commune), more than 8km from the medical station and about 25km from Ky Son Medical Center, the pregnant woman suddenly went into labor.
The pregnant woman had no amniotic fluid, the fetus was large, and there were signs of exhaustion due to not eating enough during pregnancy and having just traveled a long distance. Faced with this situation, Ms. Thoa and Ms. Moong Y Hue, general practitioner at Muong Tip Health Station, spread out blankets and used a medical kit to deliver the baby right on the road.

With the efforts of medical staff, the pregnant woman Pit Thi Hien gave birth to a baby boy, weighing about 3.5 kg. However, due to the large fetus and weak mother, the baby suffocated at birth.
“We performed CPR on the suffocating infant and breathed a sigh of relief when the baby started crying and breathing,” said Ms. Thoa.

After the health of the mother and baby stabilized, medical staff, the pregnant woman’s husband, and local residents set up a temporary shelter nearby for the mother to rest. Several volunteer groups also provided timely support to the pregnant woman.
During the recent historic flood, Muong Tip commune was isolated for a long time. The family of pregnant woman Hien also had their house and property completely swept away by the flood.
