Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant is located in Dong Son Commune, Tam Diep City, Ninh Binh Province. This is the place to receive and process domestic waste for the entire Ninh Binh Province.
The factory receives and processes waste using two methods: sorting to produce bio-fertilizers and sanitary landfills. The waste sorting area for bio-fertilizer production of the factory has more than a dozen workers, mostly women doing a "unique" job.
Garbage from many places in Ninh Binh City is gathered and dumped into the sorting area. Here, excavators will dump the garbage onto the conveyor belt, workers stand on both sides to sort it. The purpose of sorting garbage is to produce bio-fertilizer, reuse household waste, and reduce landfill.
Mr. La Phu Dung, Director of Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant, said that the plant began operating in 2014. Each year, the plant receives and processes about 125,000 tons of waste. Of which, 12,000 tons are processed by sorting to produce biofertilizer. All of the waste classified to produce biofertilizer is sorted and processed by the plant's workers.

The women who work as waste sorters at the Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant all have many years of experience. When they first started working, many of them could not stand the smell of the garbage. After a while, they got used to it, and some have been working there for nearly ten years.
Working in this unique profession, every day they have to live in an atmosphere filled with the smell of garbage from all over, for at least 8 hours a day (working 2 shifts a day).
Ms. PTC confided: "Every day, in the morning we go to work at the factory, at noon we go home to eat, and in the afternoon we come back to work again. Every hour we stand sorting trash, we get a break of about 10 minutes. The work is not too hard, but the smell of the trash is really torture."
Ms. C. added that her daily work involves coming into contact with all kinds of garbage from all over the place, with all kinds of foul odors, and she has gradually become accustomed to it. The women in the profession often joke with each other that if they don’t smell the garbage every day, they feel sad.
Standing hundreds of meters away from the garbage sorting and processing area, one can still smell the strong stench. When approaching, the women sorting the garbage still endure and work diligently. Ms. D.TL said that those who do this job, in addition to earning a living, must also love the job.
"The smell of garbage is unpleasant everywhere at work, and we always have to wear tight, multi-layered masks. Being exposed to all kinds of garbage, people in our profession really need to have "nerves of steel" to endure it," said Ms. L.
The work is special, not difficult but the working environment is polluted, however the income of women who work in waste sorting is only at the average salary. Therefore, during the process of sorting and processing waste, the women collect and sell recyclable waste.

The women who work as waste sorters at the factory are of all ages. The young ones are in their 20s, some are in their 40s. Most of them are manual laborers who applied to work at the factory to be close to home, convenient for commuting, and to take care of their families.
It is known that all workers who come to work to sort waste have contracts signed by the factory and are guaranteed full benefits according to the Labor Law. Therefore, their lives are also guaranteed, and everyone can work with peace of mind.
During work, the women must wear protective gear to avoid danger from sharp waste. Each person is also divided into different categories of waste.
"Although the work is difficult, when they come to work, they all understand and share with each other. They consider each other as family, creating joy for themselves at work as well as in life," said the leader of Ninh Binh Solid Waste Treatment Plant.
