On May 19, in Can Tho City, the People's Committee of Thot Not District coordinated with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City to organize a ceremony to present and receive the Decision and Certificate of National Intangible Cultural Heritage for the Thuan Hung rice paper making profession.

Thuan Hung rice paper making profession recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage

Thuan Hung rice paper making is a traditional craft, formed in the mid-19th century and passed down through many generations. After more than 100 years of existence and development, the rice paper making profession in Thuan Hung still retains traditional values, with profound cultural significance, crystallized from the labor and creativity of the people here.

The rice paper making profession in Thuan Hung has existed for more than 100 years.

Currently, Thuan Hung ward (in Thot Not district, Can Tho city) has 4/4 areas with people making rice paper, the most concentrated are Tan An and Tan Phu areas. There are a total of 58 households with 250 people producing according to traditional manual methods regularly and continuously. In addition, there are about 30 traditional kilns producing to supply the market during Tet. Thuan Hung rice paper currently has 2 products that meet 3-star OCOP standards.

Thuan Hung rice paper still maintains the traditional handmade method

To make delicious rice paper, keeping the characteristic flavor, rice paper makers in Thuan Hung use local ingredients and materials for processing.

Over time, until now, the production process of Thuan Hung rice paper has not changed much, except that traditional rice paper makers use some machines to support human labor such as: flour mills, coconut scrapers. However, in the main stages such as: mixing flour, spreading rice paper, drying rice paper are all done by hand, along with the experience of the baker.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee requested: The Party Committee and the government of Thot Not district need to pay more attention to the management, preservation and promotion of the national intangible cultural heritage with the Thuan Hung rice paper making profession; always pay attention to creating favorable conditions for people to develop production and business; support people to build and promote brands and products to consumers near and far; create more heritage tourism products with the characteristics of Can Tho city.
