Most students at Chiem Thanh Tan High School know Huyen because this female student has a rather special situation. Her right eye is damaged, her left eye is intact but pulled downward. Her two cheekbones clearly show two stitches with scars that extend to her lips. Her face is asymmetrical because one side has a lump of flesh. Despite her ugly appearance, what remains in the hearts of many people is that Huyen has her own beauty that deserves to be respected and loved because she is optimistically pursuing her dream of going to university.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen overcame her inferiority complex about her appearance to be determined to study.

Huyền recounted that while still in her mother’s womb, she had to endure an ironic fate. Born prematurely, her body was emaciated with two open wounds on her face. Nature forced her to stay in bed more than at home and undergo two important surgeries. When she was not yet able to walk, her parents had to send her to her grandmother to look after her so that she could go to Tay Ninh to work. In the poor countryside, she soon became accustomed to hardship, often catching snails with her grandmother to make ends meet.

By the time she was in 6th grade, Huyen became increasingly aware of her "ugly" appearance when a friend called her "one-eyed martial artist". The rude and disparaging words made her afraid to look in the mirror. She asked her grandmother many times, but she only consoled her.

The "abnormal" face has followed Huyen since she was born.

Huyen is different from her three younger siblings because they all have a delicate face and have grown up close to their parents. For Huyen, the contributions of her grandmother and Uncle Bay, who work as a garbage collector, are unforgettable in her life. Huyen confided: "I dream that one day I can change my appearance, I don't need to be beautiful, just being like everyone else is enough to be happy. If I had money for cosmetic surgery, I would spend it on my eyes. But perhaps this will never come true, because my family is very poor."

Overcome inferiority complex to study well

With the encouragement of her loved ones, Huyen went to school normally but was very shy to interact with people. Huyen was extremely afraid of crowds, because she could not hide her emotions many times when someone joked that she was as ugly as "Thi No". Feeling inferior, Huyen lived alone at home. In addition to going to class, Huyen sought out books as a friend to improve her knowledge and find joy. Thanks to that, she achieved the title of excellent student for 3 consecutive years.

Huyen is in the excellent student competition team of Chiem Thanh Tan High School.

However, in the 9th grade, Huyen's academic performance gradually declined. "At that time, I decided to drop out of school to go to work. I knew my shortcomings, so I only dared to ask to work at a cheap restaurant or cafe. Even so, they did not accept me, saying they would notify me later, but there was no response. This mistake caused me to delay school for a year, but also helped me realize that perhaps only studying could change my future and the way people viewed me," Huyen said.

Determined, Huyen continued to go to school. At the end of 10th grade, Huyen achieved the title of excellent student and was selected for the school's excellent student team in geography. According to Ms. Le Thi Ha My, a teacher at Chiem Thanh Tan High School, Huyen is one of 3 students from the school participating in the provincial excellent student competition in the 2023-2024 school year. "Initially, Huyen was shy, but when it came to reviewing, she was very diligent, increasingly confident and showed her talent. Huyen's strength is her ability to quickly and logically make comments and synthesize knowledge," Ms. My shared.

Huyen's dream is to become a lawyer.

Now, Huyen confidently takes off the mask that has always been with her, proactively integrating with her friends. Huyen said that she had told herself to change her thinking, so she should ignore the bad worries. Because there are still many people around who sympathize, share and open up to her.

"No matter what the circumstances are, knowing how to love yourself is always the most effective 'medicine' to relieve sadness and negative thoughts. I take this as my motto in life to be more steadfast on my journey to conquer my dream of becoming a student. I hope to become a lawyer in the future to make my family proud, even though I am very ugly," said student Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen.
