Promoting the 66-year tradition of building and growing up of the heroic Truong Son Army, Truong Son soldiers in Quang Ninh today are always united and attached through activities of supporting, sharing, and accompanying each other in life.
After the Geneva Agreement, our country was temporarily divided into two regions. In early 1959, the 15th Central Conference of the Party set out the basic task for the revolution as liberating the South; quickly opening a strategic transport route to support the battlefields became an extremely important and urgent task for our entire Party, army and people.
Implementing that policy, on May 19, 1959, Group 559 - a special military task force was assigned by the Central Committee to open a route to transport military goods to the South, organize the transportation of troops, and transfer official documents and papers from the North to the South and vice versa. The Truong Son Road or the Ho Chi Minh "trail" is a strategic military traffic network running through 20 provinces from the North to the South of Vietnam; running through Laos and Cambodia; stretching from the East Truong Son to the West Truong Son, from the Central Highlands down to the East and the West of the South. This traffic system played a role in providing troops, food, weapons and equipment to support the Southern Liberation Army and the Vietnam People's Army throughout the 16 years (1959-1975) of the Vietnam War.
From its inception until the victorious Spring General Offensive and Uprising in 1975, the Ho Chi Minh Trail was continuously expanded, lengthened, and increasingly developed, reaching deeper into battlefields, strategic directions, and campaigns. Thanks to the historic Truong Son - Ho Chi Minh Trail route, our army was able to carry out major operations, with tanks and heavy artillery into the Central Highlands, suddenly launching the opening attack of the Buon Me Thuot campaign, successively crushing the puppet military zones and corps, rapidly advancing to liberate Saigon on April 30, 1975, completing the cause of liberating the South and reunifying the country after 30 years of protracted resistance.
There were thousands of soldiers, youth volunteers, frontline laborers... who steadfastly overcame countless hardships and sacrificed themselves to create the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. Among them, there were many outstanding sons of the Quang Ninh Mining Region who had the honor of standing in the Truong Son Army formation in the past, participating in combat and serving in combat. Thousands of people fell or left a part of their blood and bones on this route.
The Truong Son - Ho Chi Minh Trail Traditional Association of Quang Ninh province currently has nearly 1,600 cadres and members, who are former soldiers, youth volunteers, and frontline laborers. Returning to normal life, the Truong Son soldiers continue to maintain solidarity with their comrades, encourage each other to promote the tradition of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" and actively respond to local construction and development movements. In particular, they set good examples in their places of residence, educate their children and grandchildren about the tradition of patriotism, and help members in difficult circumstances to rise up in life and successfully carry out local defense and military tasks.
CCB Tran Quang Thanh, Chairman of the Truong Son - Ho Chi Minh Trail Tradition Association in Quang Ninh province, said: Since its establishment, the association has gone through 3 congresses with the motto "Gathering, solidarity, tradition, affection, solid organization, effective operation". Every year, the association always actively participates in major movements and campaigns, such as Truong Son members doing good business, reducing poverty, helping each other overcome difficulties, improving life and has maintained and promoted effectiveness. From the savings contributed by members, every year the association has participated in building dozens of gratitude houses, giving away hundreds of savings books... That is a practical work of great significance in building solidarity in the association.
The Truong Son - Ho Chi Minh Trail Tradition Association of Quang Ninh province also maintains annual meetings to review traditions, so that members can exchange, visit and encourage each other. Associations at all levels proactively propose to local Party committees and authorities to pay attention to implementing policies and regimes; organize free health check-ups for members; organize trips to the source, visit old battlefields... At the same time, encourage the spirit of emulation in production and business, stabilize life, help each other overcome difficulties, improve life, strive to become well-off and rich.
Most of the Truong Son soldiers returning to civilian life are active members of the Veterans Association, especially in participating in building the new rural areas, protecting security and order, and social safety... History is gradually fading away, but no matter the circumstances, the comradely and teammate sentiment of the Truong Son soldiers is still permeated and shining.
