According to Medscape, a new study led by Associate Professor, Dr. Shiv Mudgal from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences evaluated the effects of several herbs on type 2 diabetes.
The results were drawn from 44 randomized clinical trials with more than 3,000 participants, looking at six herbal remedies thought to be good for blood sugar levels: apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, ginger, and saffron.

The results showed that four things really worked. They included three spices that Asians often use in their dishes: turmeric, cinnamon, and curry.
Fourth is apple cider vinegar, which is more popular in the West but has also been gaining popularity in Asia in recent years. Apple cider vinegar is also the most effective of all the condiments in helping to lower fasting blood sugar levels.
Publishing the findings in Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews , Associate Professor Mudgal added that he hopes the review will help healthcare professionals as well as diabetes patients understand the effectiveness of incorporating these herbs into diabetes treatment.
The authors say they are still working to further clarify the mechanisms of action of these spices, as well as how they compete with each other if used together.
However, the discovery that simple spices can help control diabetes is great news. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases, with many complications if not well controlled, causing serious loss of quality of life and early death.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, a 2021 statistic shows that up to 10.5% of adults worldwide are living with diabetes.
