Iran's Foreign Ministry said on February 22 that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will arrive in Tehran early next week to meet with his counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss "regional and international developments."

"The visit... will be carried out within the framework of ongoing consultations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation on bilateral relations and regional and international developments," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said.

According to Mr. Baqaei, during the visit, in addition to holding talks with his counterpart Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister Lavrov will also meet a number of other senior Iranian officials.

Iran's Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, told ISNA news agency that Foreign Minister Lavrov's visit is expected to take place on Tuesday, February 25.

The last time Foreign Minister Lavrov visited Iran was in October 2023 to attend a meeting organized by Iran to find a solution to tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Tehran and Moscow are key allies of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown by Islamist-led rebels in December 2024.

Both Russia and Moscow are also under heavy Western sanctions. Measures against Russia have been stepped up since Moscow launched a special operation in Ukraine in 2022.

The West has accused Tehran of supplying drones and missiles to Moscow to fuel the conflict and imposed sanctions on the country. However, Iran denies such Western accusations.

Most of the sanctions on Tehran stem from Western efforts to stop what they say are Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons, allegations Iran has always denied.
