Sleeping naked - a habit that can easily cause illness

VnExpressVnExpress25/06/2023

Sleeping naked can easily cause rashes and skin irritation due to contact with dirt on the bed sheets, leading to stuffy nose, coughing or sneezing.

According to research by mattress company Casper, more than 28% of Americans surveyed said they sleep naked every day, and more than 71% said they never go to bed without clothes. In fact, sleeping naked is not an uncommon habit, but it is not suitable for everyone, especially those who suffer from night sweats or sensitive skin.

According to Julius Patrick, head of sleep medicine at Bupa's Cromwell Hospital, when you sleep, sweat accumulates and stays on your body. Sleeping naked will cause the sweat to evaporate quickly, making you feel cold. "Wearing light clothing to bed will absorb the sweat, cooling you down," Patrick says.

Bed sheets and mattresses often accumulate dust, oil, dead skin, and sweat. Skin that comes into direct contact with the sheets can develop rashes and irritation. Wearing clothes to sleep helps prevent dirt from sticking to the skin, causing clogged pores and acne. When you sleep, your body sheds dead skin cells. Mites come to feed on this dead skin, which can cause allergies, stuffy nose, coughing, and sneezing.

Experts recommend washing bed sheets at least twice a week. People with eczema or psoriasis should not sleep naked on polyester or other synthetic fabrics.

A way to get a good night's sleep without taking off your clothes is to close the curtains during the day to avoid sunlight, and open the doors when the room temperature is higher than outside.

Experts also recommend taking a bath before bed. Some people find that taking a hot shower or bath to cool down helps promote faster, deeper sleep.
