For many years, cancer treatments using bacteria have relied on the mechanism of activating the immune system to attack cancer cells. However, these methods have had limitations for patients with immunodeficiency due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy, according to the medical news site News Medical.
New research led by Professor Eijiro Miyako from the Japan Advanced Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, in collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo and the University of Tsukuba, has overcome the above obstacle with a synthetic microorganism system called "AUN therapy", opening a new turning point for cancer treatment.

The new discovery marks a major turning point in cancer treatment, especially for immunocompromised patients.

AUN includes 2 types of natural bacteria:
- Proteus mirabilis (A-gyo): A bacterium that can grow in tumor environments.
- Rhodopseudomonas palustris (UN-gyo): Photosynthetic bacteria that act as regulators.
When combined, the two bacteria achieved remarkable tumor-killing effects in both mouse and human cancer models, even under immunocompromised conditions—all independent of immune cells.
AUN therapy is not only effective but also safe, with high biocompatibility and almost no serious side effects such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS).
Outstanding results of AUN therapy
- Precisely targets and destroys tumor blood vessels and cancer cells.
- Morphological changes of A-gyo (fiber elongation) upon exposure to tumor metabolites increase killing potential.
- Change the ratio between the two types of bacteria (A-gyo : UN-gyo) in tumor tissue from the initial 3:97 to 99:1, helping to optimize treatment efficacy.
- Reduce toxicity and closely control side effects.
- UN-gyo only plays a regulatory role when A-gyo is present, helping to control the toxicity of both, while increasing the ability to select and destroy cancer cells, according to News Medical .
According to Professor Miyako, the research team aims to start clinical trials within the next year. The new discovery marks a major turning point in cancer treatment, especially for immunocompromised patients.
