There are less than twenty days left until Lunar New Year, however, after receiving compensation support funds for site clearance, households with tombs located in the planned area for the construction of the resettlement area of the North-South expressway project, the eastern section of Van Ninh - Cam Lo, through Gio An commune, Gio Linh district, have started to move their tombs to the planned area to hand over the site to the construction unit before Tet.

Eight graves of Mr. Le The Hai's family, Binh Son village, Gio An commune, Gio Linh district, are located within the land acquisition area of the Van Ninh - Cam Lo expressway project through Gio An commune, Gio Linh district. According to Mr. Hai, the exhumation of graves is not simply a matter of compensation, but a spiritual matter, requiring many factors to be taken into account.
In addition, the most difficult thing is to find the exact location of the tombs outside the mausoleum, because for too long, these tombs were not built properly, and over time, their positions have been shifted a lot. Mr. Hai's concerns are also common concerns of other households and clans whose tombs need to be relocated to build a resettlement area to serve the Van Ninh - Cam Lo expressway project.
Compared to the area of agricultural land and residential land, the area of graves that need to be recovered is not large. However, the relocation and excavation is quite complicated because it is related to the spiritual issues of families and clans. Understanding the concerns of the people, the Gio An commune government has coordinated with the Compensation and Resettlement Support Council of the North-South Expressway Project in Gio Linh district to organize many meetings with families and clans whose graves are located within the project's land acquisition area to propagate and mobilize people to agree to land acquisition.
In just a short time, after the District People's Committee decided to pay compensation to the people at the end of December 2023, the Commune People's Committee urgently implemented the next steps such as paying compensation, finding land and supporting the leveling of the ground to build a new cemetery to relocate the graves for burial, in accordance with the wishes of the people.
After receiving the compensation for land acquisition, Mr. Hai's family and other households carried out the necessary procedures to exhume the graves and move them to a new burial site, more than 1km away from the old site.
Mr. Hai shared: “Moving graves is a big and important task for the family. It is not true that we do not have worries and concerns, but after attending many propaganda conferences and listening to propagandists from local authorities, 100% of our family members have determined to support the Party and State's policy to soon complete the construction of the Gio An commune resettlement area to serve the expressway project, bringing practical benefits to local people."
Implementing the North-South expressway project, site clearance work for the Van Ninh-Cam Lo expressway component project in the province has not met the set requirements due to slow progress in building resettlement areas.
Households have not been able to resettle to stabilize their lives, so the land has not been handed over to the project. Regarding this project, Gio Linh district has invested in building 3 resettlement areas in Hai Thai, Gio An and Linh Truong communes, with a total of 132 resettlement lots in the 3 areas.
For the resettlement area in Gio An commune, the Provincial People's Committee has approved the Feasibility Study Report with a total investment of 50 billion VND, arranging resettlement for 72 lots, including 16 lots of Linh Truong commune registered for resettlement in Gio An commune.
In order to hand over the site for the construction of the resettlement area before the Lunar New Year in accordance with the direction of the province and the district, Gio An commune has made efforts to propagate and mobilize people to agree to relocate 7 mausoleums and 34 graves within the affected area, including a tomb built over 200 years ago. Chairman of Gio An Commune People's Committee Nguyen Van Song said: "The relocation and exhumation of mausoleums often encounters many difficulties, not as simple as compensation for agricultural land or other types of land. The biggest pressure is to complete the relocation and exhumation of mausoleums before the Lunar New Year, while the custom of local people is usually to repair and sweep tombs in January and February of the lunar calendar.
This is an unprecedented task and the number of graves that need to be relocated is so large. Identifying this as an important task to speed up site clearance, in recent times, the Party Committee and the communal government have focused on mobilizing, propagating, and explaining to people to comply with the policies of the Party and the State and agree to implement before Tet in accordance with the requirements of the project implementation schedule.
After receiving high consensus from the people, the People's Committee of the commune sent militia and self-defense forces to support the people in carrying out the excavation and relocation of 7 mausoleums and 34 graves within the affected area for land acquisition and resettlement area construction.
Along with the participation of Party committees and authorities at all levels, the consensus of people and clans in Gio An commune in relocating the tomb is very important to help the locality complete the handover of the project site before Tet in accordance with the direction of the province.
