The collapsed road section at Mat Cat canal continues to show signs of "frog jaws", posing a potential risk of traffic accidents.
According to the reflection of people in Phu Khanh area, in March 2025, a 50m-long landslide appeared on the traffic route along Mat Cat canal, causing the concrete road surface to collapse, posing a danger to passersby. The collapsed section was planted with bamboo trees and other objects by local people to warn traffic participants to limit speed and be careful when passing through this section of road. Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu in Phu Khanh area said: “Before that, I saw signs of cracks and tilting on the above road section. By March 2025, the concrete road surface collapsed more than 1m. Currently, right at the collapsed section, there are “frog jaws” and cracks, with a very high risk of landslides.”
The traffic road collapse occurred right on the road section where people had built a solid embankment to prevent landslides. Currently, the 4m wide concrete road surface after the collapse is only over 1m, making it difficult for people to travel, especially trucks cannot circulate, affecting the transportation of agricultural products. People bought rocks to fill in the collapse to limit unfortunate incidents from happening. Mr. Nguyen Anh Vu added: “Previously, my family drove a car from our house to Hang Ban bridge to move to Nguyen Van Quy street very conveniently. For the past 2 months, my family has had to drive around Xeo La canal to get to Nguyen Van Quy street, which is very time-consuming, costly, and the road is very difficult. I recommend that local authorities and relevant agencies soon take measures to reinforce and fix the collapsed section.”
According to residents of Phu Khanh area, in 2020, the traffic route along Mat Cat canal was invested by Cai Rang District People's Committee to upgrade the concrete road with a width of 4m and a length of 1.6km. After 5 years of use, the road has appeared many cracks and subsidence at the foot of the road. Mr. Nguyen Van Huy in Khanh Binh area informed: "Currently, the 4m concrete road along Mat Cat canal has many cracks and the concrete road surface is tilted. About 50m from Mat Cat canal bridge, the traffic route has been cracked nearly 100m, with many "frog jaw" spots, and the risk of landslides is quite high. The authorities have reinforced it with Melaleuca piles to limit landslides. However, this is only a temporary solution. In the long term, I suggest that the city pay attention and reinforce it with reinforced concrete to limit large-scale landslides".
Mr. Pham Quang Hiep, Vice Chairman of Phu Thu Ward People's Committee, said: "Since the beginning of the year, there have been 2 landslides and subsidence points in the ward. After the incident, the locality mobilized forces to support people in overcoming it. The landslide section in Xeo Gua canal is 25m long, 2.5m deep into the mainland, and has not affected traffic. In particular, the collapsed section in Mat Cat canal affects traffic, posing a potential risk of traffic accidents. In the near future, the locality will coordinate with the area and the ward militia to reinforce it by filling the soil to ensure traffic safety. The ward People's Committee has also proposed that Cai Rang District People's Committee conduct an early survey and find a permanent solution to help people travel more conveniently and safely."
