Severe diabetes complications due to stopping medication on his own and drinking alcohol regularly

Recently, doctors at Thanh Thuy District Medical Center, Phu Tho Province, said they had treated a patient with a history of diabetes with severe complications. The patient, Mr. PVG (50 years old, Thanh Thuy, Phu Tho Province), was admitted to the hospital in a state of drowsiness, difficulty breathing, and low blood pressure.

It is known that the patient has a history of diabetes and needs to take medication every day, but for many weeks he has stopped taking his medication on his own and regularly drinks alcohol.

The day before being admitted to the hospital, the patient drank a lot of alcohol. At noon on the same day of admission, the patient vomited a lot, vomited dark brown fluid, had a fever, difficulty breathing, fatigue, slow consciousness... so the family took the patient to Thanh Thuy Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Here, after examination combined with paraclinical results, the doctors consulted and came up with the diagnosis: Septic shock; pneumonia; severe metabolic acidosis/Diabetic ketoacidosis. The patient was treated with vasopressors, antibiotics, insulin combined with continuous blood filtration to actively treat the patient.

After 24 consecutive dialysis sessions, the patient's metabolic acidosis has stabilized. After 4 days of treatment, the patient's blood pressure has stabilized, the vasopressor has been removed, the shortness of breath has improved, and the patient is more conscious. The patient continues to be monitored and treated with antibiotics and insulin to regulate blood sugar.

Currently, after 8 days of intensive treatment in the department, the patient's health has stabilized, no longer tired, no more shortness of breath, stable blood pressure, eating normally. The patient is expected to be discharged in the next few days.

What should people with diabetes do to prevent complications?

BSCKI. Nguyen Trung Duc - Head of Emergency Department, HSTC & CD shared: For patients with chronic diseases such as: Diabetes; high blood pressure... not taking medication regularly every day will easily lead to acute complications that are life-threatening.

Through this, the doctor also recommends that patients with underlying diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure... need to take medication regularly every day according to the doctor's prescription, do not stop taking medication on your own. Need to have regular check-ups to detect risk factors, especially should not use stimulants such as alcohol, beer, cigarettes...
