Hanoi A 35-year-old patient went to see a doctor for kidney stones due to severe pain in the lumbar region. The doctor discovered that he had 4 kidneys in his body, which is considered rare.
On March 22, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology Surgery, E Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with severe pain in the lumbar region, abdominal distension, painful urination, and blood in the urine. Test results showed a stone in the right ureter.
More surprisingly, the CT scan results showed that the patient had four kidneys, the doctor said. This abnormality is one of the causes of kidney stones. This is a rare congenital malformation, the kidneys develop abnormally during the formation and development of the fetus, and has not been recorded much in the world medical literature.
"Fortunately for the patient, the four kidneys and two separate ureters were all placed in the correct bladder position, eliminating many other dangerous complications," said Mr. Lien.

The patient was treated by a doctor with a laser lithotripsy. This technique uses an endoscope that passes from the urethra, through the bladder and up the ureter to directly access the stone. Then, compressed air or laser energy is used to break up the stone and then pump and grab to remove all the stone fragments.
Currently, the patient has recovered and is preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
