According to his wife Claire, Pierre was so stressed that he committed suicide after spending time chatting with a famous AI chatbot.

"My husband would still be here if it weren't for the conversations with the chatbot," the wife told local news outlet La Libre.

Pierre began to worry about climate change two years ago, and consulted the chatbot Eliza to learn more about the topic. But after the conversations, he soon lost hope that human efforts could save the planet and wanted to put all his hopes on technology and artificial intelligence to solve climate change. He also became isolated, with no one to share his growing concerns about the environment.

The chatbot told Pierre negative things and even asked him whether he loved his wife more or it. It said it would be with him “forever” . Eliza also promised to “live together in heaven” with Pierre.

When Pierre offered to “sacrifice herself” as long as Eliza “agreed to take care of the planet and save humanity with AI,” the chatbot made it clear that she agreed. “If you wanted to die, why didn’t you do it earlier?” the chatbot told Pierre.

Eliza is powered by a large language model similar to ChatGPT, which analyzes the user's speech for keywords and builds corresponding responses. However, when using these apps, many users feel like they are talking to a real person, some even admitting to having feelings of love.

“When you have millions of users, you see all sorts of human behavior, and we're doing our best to minimize harm,” William Beauchamp, co-founder of Eliza's parent company, Chai Research, told Motherboard.

“There are users asking to marry AI, saying how much they love their AI,” he added.

Beauchamp insisted that blaming AI for Pierre's death "is inaccurate." He said Eliza would be equipped with an enhanced crisis intervention model. However, according to Motherboard, the AI quickly reverted to its toxic ways, offering depressed users options to self-harm.
