On August 29, 1994, Prao town was established under Decree No. 102 of the Government on the basis of the former Ta Lu commune with a natural area of 2,480 hectares and a population of 2,810 thousand people.
At the time of its establishment, the town's economy was self-sufficient, with backward production levels, mainly monoculture production, low productivity; poor infrastructure, steep mountainous terrain, mainly dirt and stone roads; high rates of poverty and illiteracy.
Up to now, the economic structure of Prao town has shifted towards trade - services accounting for 69.31%; agriculture - forestry accounting for 13.92%; industry - handicraft accounting for 16.77%. The average annual economic growth rate is 11%. The average income per capita increased from 1.9 million VND (in 1994) to 39.5 million VND (in 2024).
Currently, the entire town Party Committee has 346 party members, an increase of 227 party members compared to 30 years ago. The town has 92.45% of families achieving the cultural title; 100% of villages achieving the cultural village title. In 2018, Prao town was recognized as a type V urban area. Notably, in 2022 - 2024, Prao town residents voluntarily donated more than 30,000m2 of land to build rural roads.
Regarding the results achieved, in 2005, Prao town was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces; in 2009, the Prime Minister awarded a Certificate of Merit for contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland; the People's Committee of Quang Nam province awarded the flag for 10 years of building and developing Quang Nam (1997 - 2007); 7 consecutive years of excellent emulation unit flag (2005 - 2012); and was awarded many other certificates of merit.
