Reuters sources confirm that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering Richard Grenell, a veteran of his previous administration, for the position of special envoy to help resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump's plan to appoint a senior diplomat tasked with "finding a solution, achieving a peace agreement" was first reported by Fox News last week. A source said the person for the position would have "a great deal of credibility." Grenell, a seasoned diplomat, served as U.S. ambassador to Germany from 2018 to 2020 and as acting director of national intelligence for several months in 2020. Grenell has advocated for the establishment of an "autonomous region" in the conflict zone in Ukraine, while also emphasizing that Kyiv should not be admitted to NATO anytime soon, a position supported by many in Trump's team. Grenell's supporters emphasize his long diplomatic career and deep understanding of European issues, according to Reuters . He served as the president's special envoy for the Serbia-Kosovo peace talks from 2019 to 2021. In September 2020, he brokered an agreement that paved the way for economic normalization and helped ease tensions in the region at the time. Over the past few days, President-elect Donald Trump has announced new members of his future administration. Some of Trump's choices have made controversial statements about the war in Ukraine and opposed providing more military aid to Kyiv. Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly pledged to end the Ukraine conflict "within 24 hours" if elected. He did not explain how he would fulfill this commitment, although he stated that he would use his "excellent relationship" with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to mediate a peace deal. Trump spoke with President Zelensky last week and told NBC News that he might discuss the matter with President Putin in the near future. Putin congratulated Trump on his election victory, telling reporters that he was ready to speak with the US president-elect. While the Kremlin has consistently expressed skepticism about proposals that Trump could easily end the conflict with Ukraine, President Putin said Trump's statements on the issue were "at least worth noting." It remains unclear what solution Trump will pursue for the conflict. During his election campaign, Vice President-elect JD Vance suggested that a ceasefire could be declared and a demilitarized zone established along the current 1,300km frontline, while simultaneously denying Ukraine NATO membership.
