In 2012, seeing the potential and value of macadamia trees, Ms. Yen boldly bought and planted 200 trees on an area of 1 hectare of her family. At that time, macadamia trees were still quite unfamiliar to the people, Ms. Yen had to learn care techniques to apply to the macadamia garden. When the fruit was ready to harvest, but because it was a relatively new product, it was difficult to find buyers. Consumption was difficult, so the price was not as expected.
Seeing this, instead of selling raw nuts, Ms. Yen invested in machinery and equipment to produce and roast macadamia nuts for sale. She also purchased macadamia nuts from local households to ensure the source of raw materials.
At first, due to lack of experience, she bought immature seeds, the dried products did not meet the requirements... After the initial failure and loss, Ms. Yen was not discouraged but became more determined to develop the economy with macadamia nuts. With perseverance in learning, Ms. Yen accumulated a lot of experience, and the products gradually found a stable output.
To ensure stable raw material areas and product output, in 2019, Ms. Yen decided to work with other households to establish Hai Yen Agricultural , Service and Trade Cooperative, including 7 members and 25 associated households, with a total area of 70 hectares of macadamia growing in communes in Dak Song district.
Taking on the role of managing and operating the cooperative, Ms. Yen is very concerned, looking for solutions to develop the cooperative. Ms. Yen confided: “At first, I encountered many difficulties, even suffered many losses. But I told myself why others could do it but I couldn’t, so I constantly tried to find solutions to do it. In addition to focusing on caring for and producing available macadamia products, the cooperative is promoting links with households, expanding the macadamia growing area, ensuring raw materials in production.”
Thanks to the promotion of the consumption market, the cooperative has gradually formed a chain of agricultural production links, helping members and many local households have a stable source of income, and feel secure in growing and producing. In 2022 alone, her cooperative sold more than 4 tons of cracked-shelled dried macadamia nuts, bringing in revenue of more than 800 million VND. The cooperative's products are present in many provinces and cities across the country such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Vung Tau, Binh Duong , Binh Phuoc...
Ms. Trinh Thi Thuy, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Duc An town (Dak Song) commented: "The cooperative of which Ms. Yen is the director is a typical economic model owned by women, contributing to the economic development of the locality. Ms. Yen herself is also a shining example of courage, not afraid of difficulties, hardships, creativity, and diligence in production and labor."
