The hero is not far away.

Two young men who broke through a burning roof to rescue seven people trapped in Lingnan once again remind us that heroes are not far away, but are present in ordinary people.

Late in the afternoon of March 24th, a seven-story house in a small alley on Linh Nam Street ( Hanoi ) unexpectedly became the thin line between life and death.

The fire erupted on the second floor, and thick smoke quickly blocked the exits. Seven people were trapped inside, their cries for help mingling with panic and despair.

In a moment when fear could have made anyone hesitate, two young men chose to venture toward the flames. They climbed onto the roof, using hammers and iron bars to break through the scorching hot corrugated iron, creating an escape route. Within minutes, all seven people were safely brought out before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Remarkably, they weren't firefighters, professional rescue workers, or equipped with any protective gear. On the rooftop, the heat was intense in front of them, smoke and flames billowed behind them, and the ground was precarious. Yet they acted, simply as if by instinct.

We are accustomed to thinking of "heroes" in terms of grand visions, glorious achievements, and unforgettable sacrifices. But the reality of life quietly reminds us that heroes often don't come from extraordinary deeds, but begin with very ordinary choices.

Looking back, stories like these have never been rare.

In May 2024, during a fire at a mini-apartment building on Trung Kinh Street (Hanoi), two young men, Dong Van Tuan and Hoang Anh Tuan, used a ladder and a hammer to break down the wall, rescuing three people trapped in the flames.

In the early morning of January 11, 2026, in Nghe An province , a traffic police team from Dien Chau station used wooden planks to break through the iron doors of two burning houses, safely rescuing 11 people, including the elderly and young children.

Or, in Da Nang , a young man didn't hesitate to jump over the bridge railing and plunge into the fast-flowing water to save someone in a life-threatening situation.

These individuals, if placed in a crowd, would likely go unnoticed. They don't bear grand titles, nor are they prepared for life-or-death situations. Yet, in those crucial moments, they chose to prioritize the lives of others over their own safety.

What is truly commendable lies not only in the courageous act itself, but also in a deeper foundation: a sense of civic responsibility and the spread of humanistic values throughout society.

A society is not only measured by its economic growth rate or figures, but also by how people treat each other in times of greatest hardship. When acts of kindness from ordinary people continue to emerge, it shows that the wellspring of compassion still flows persistently within the community.

However, it is also important to recognize that such courageous acts should not be merely met with temporary recognition. More importantly, it is about creating a safer social environment where fire hazards and accidents are strictly controlled; where every citizen is equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and assist others when needed.

Because no one wants to be a "hero" in life-or-death situations. But if everyone has the necessary awareness and skills, dangerous moments can be minimized from the outset; and when a crisis occurs, there will be more hands ready to lend a helping hand at the right time.

The story in Linh Nam will eventually fade into the background of the daily news. But what remains is not just a fire that has been brought under control, but the image of two ordinary people who stepped onto the roof, on the fragile line between life and death, to create an escape route for others.

That's not a myth.
That's life, where the hero, in fact, is never far away.

We often picture "heroes" associated with great achievements and sacrifices that are etched in history. But life reminds us of something simpler: heroes often begin with very ordinary choices, like the way the two young men acted in the fire in Linh Nam.
