My mother said she didn't cry because of pain, but because she was afraid of losing my father – her lifelong partner. But then, a miracle happened, and both my father and I were safe. My father overcame his life-threatening heart condition. And the first time he held me in his arms, he broke down in tears. "I came back to life because of you," he told me when I was old enough to understand the day I was born.
My childhood was unlike other children's. I wasn't carried around by my father or tossed about on his shoulders. When I was little, I used to be very sad and felt left out when I saw my friends being held by their fathers. But then my mother said, "Your father is afraid you'll fall because he's sick and weak." At that moment, I wasn't sad anymore; I just felt more love and compassion for my father.
Dad is always there to support Bao Nhi in all her activities.
My father was a man of few words, but every word he spoke contained valuable life lessons that I have carried with me to this day.
I remember vividly the day I came home from school looking sad because I'd gotten a bad grade in Math. My father didn't scold me or ask why. He just quietly took a piece of white paper, drew a ladder, and said, "Do you see this ladder? To climb higher, you have to take one step at a time. If you fall, get up and keep going. Everyone starts from the lowest step and works their way up."
My father taught me that failure isn't scary – giving up is what's truly frightening.
Then, one time, I was misunderstood by my friends and felt so wronged that I burst into tears. My father listened silently, then gently said, "Not everyone will understand you right away, but if you live righteously, time will tell."
Those words have stayed with me to this day, reminding me to always live kindly and remain true to myself. My father rarely expressed his love to me and my mother in words like other fathers, but his love permeated every small action. From the light he turned on on the staircase when my mother and I came home late, to the quiet, proud look in his eyes every time I was honored, stood on stage, or appeared on television.
I understand that I am my father's hope. Not to become the best, but to become a kind, strong, and compassionate person like him – the man who sacrificed his youth and health to protect me and my mother.
If I were to call someone a "hero," I wouldn't hesitate to say, "It's my father," who lived his entire life quietly for me.
I love you, Dad!
