Entering the large hall of the Air Force Officer School, our first impression was that on both sides of the entrance door hung 54 portraits of leaders and Armed Forces Heroes of the school through the ages. These were paintings by professional military Major Luu Thanh Qua - Propaganda officer ( Political Department, Air Force Officer School). In the military environment, besides drawing propaganda paintings for the unit, he also painted landscapes and activities of soldiers on the training ground, training grounds...

Passionate about painting since childhood

Born into a family with an artistic tradition in Vinh City ( Nghe An Province), from a young age, Luu Thanh Qua was taught by his grandfather and father to hold a brush to paint everyday objects, so he soon developed a passion for painting. Growing up, Luu Thanh Qua studied at Vinh Pedagogical University, majoring in Mathematics and Information Technology. In 2001, a delegation from the Air Defense - Air Force came to recruit soldiers, so he immediately put down his pen and joined the army. In the army, he developed his strengths in painting.

To improve his knowledge and painting skills, in 2005, Luu Thanh Qua attended a part-time class specializing in painting. In 2008, he graduated and was admitted to the Fine Arts Association - Khanh Hoa Literature and Arts Association. After a short time, he created a number of valuable works of art, loved by soldiers and the public, such as: "Quynh huong", "Vet chan troi tren cat", "Dan chim xanh", "Huan luong bay", "San chan chien", "Tieng goo nuoc song"... using oil and watercolor. Among the works, the theme of soldiers is still the main one. He shared: "My favorite theme is composing about soldiers. Admiring the courage and sacrifice of soldiers in training and combat; in carrying out the task of protecting the Fatherland and helping people prevent and fight natural disasters, fires... has urged me to hold a brush to compose true works about soldiers".

Breathe life into your paintings

In 2013, Major Luu Thanh Qua was admitted to the Vietnam Fine Arts Association. This is the motivation for him to be passionate about creating and painting. Using different materials and artistic styles, his paintings are always solid in composition and harmonious in color, helping viewers easily perceive the content of the work, especially the paintings that reflect the life of fighting, training and studying of soldiers.

In addition to his success in the propaganda painting genre, Major Luu Thanh Qua is also known to the army and the public for his sketches. This is a way of obtaining material through direct drawing of characters or activities of the army on the training ground, training grounds to serve as a realistic basis for his oil paintings. Many sketches in flight training activities at the Air Force Regiments were almost completely portrayed by him, marking memorable moments of officers, pilots, and technical staff in flight training and combat training.

Major Luu Thanh Qua said that since 2003, he has created thousands of paintings in many different genres and materials, including more than 300 paintings on the theme of the armed forces. Many of his works have been introduced on television, in newspapers or used as documents at the Vietnam Military History Museum, such as the work “Dan chim xanh” (Blue Birds), or the work “Quynh huong” (Brightflowers) purchased by the National Institute of Nutrition for display. In addition, many of his works have been exhibited nationwide on the theme of the armed forces and revolutionary war. Some of his works were also exhibited in France in 2007, such as “Ca go” (Wooden Fish) and in Russia in 2016, with the work “Lang ve song” (Riverside Village).

Colonel PHAN DANG THANH - Head of Politics, Air Force Officer School: Professional military major Luu Thanh Qua is a painter who is always devoted to art. He regularly participates in creative camps on the theme of armed forces and revolutionary war organized by the Propaganda Department - General Department of Politics. Recently, he completed the work "Red Tide" and is preparing to introduce it to the public. This work uses oil paint with strong red tones; expressing the spirit and courage of soldiers in the mission of protecting the Fatherland and helping people prevent and fight natural disasters and fires. Through this work, he wants to introduce to the public the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers who bravely rushed into the sea of fire or always stretched out in storms and floods, acting as shields to save people, protect people's property and keep the city, village and hamlet always peaceful.

With his contributions to the unit's propaganda and agitation work, and his achievements in creating paintings, Major Luu Thanh Qua has been awarded many certificates of merit, certificates of merit and awards at all levels inside and outside the military. In 2021, he was certified by the General Department of Politics for his work "Call of the Country" as excellent in expressing the theme "Studying and following the ideology, morality and style of Ho Chi Minh".
