Senior Lieutenant Khuat Viet Anh guides 9th grade students to read more reference books at Quang Trung High School library. |
Always the first to arrive at class, Le Van Hai, a 9th grader at Quang Trung Secondary School (Quang Nham Commune), took the opportunity to review his old lessons. Hai carefully wrote down vocabulary words in his notebook and slowly practiced reading and pronunciation... Hai shared: "I used to think that going to school to learn to read and write was enough, after finishing 9th grade I would quit school to go to the fields. But Viet Anh came to my house to encourage and motivate me to join a free English class. It was he who "planted" in me faith and hope for the future ahead."
Born and raised in Hanoi and graduated with a major in English from the People's Security Academy in 2019, Senior Lieutenant Khuat Viet Anh came to work at the Department of Foreign Affairs - Ministry of Public Security . In 2023, he volunteered to work at the Quang Nham Border Commune Police.
Most of the students in the commune are ethnic minority children, disadvantaged in accessing English knowledge. From there, he had the idea of opening a free English class. Senior Lieutenant Khuat Viet Anh shared that at first the class was held at the meeting house of Kleng A Bung village, so the facilities were lacking and degraded. After that, he borrowed an after-school class at Quang Trung Secondary School to organize foreign language classes for the children every Thursday and Friday evening.
The class welcomes more than 20 students who are grade 9 students at Quang Trung Secondary School. Currently, he teaches 3 skills: vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. Every month, he has a knowledge test for the students along with small rewards to encourage and motivate those who study well. Pham Quynh Anh, a student at Quang Trung Secondary School, shared: “Anh Viet Anh teaches English very well, it is easy to understand and fun. I know a lot of vocabulary and have a good grasp of grammar. This year, I am taking the 10th grade entrance exam which includes three subjects: Math, Vietnamese and English. After nearly half a year of being taught by Anh Viet Anh, I am confident with English.”
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Quang Trung Secondary School, affirmed: “Participating in Mr. Viet Anh’s English class, many students have made remarkable progress. Recently, he has built an English bookshelf in the school library, helping students to consult, study and entertain themselves.”
Lieutenant Colonel Ho Van Nhu - Head of Quang Nham Commune Police commented: “First Lieutenant Khuat Viet Anh is a young officer transferred from the Ministry of Public Security to work in Quang Nham Commune - a border commune with nearly 99% ethnic minority people. After nearly 2 years of working, Viet Anh has always upheld his sense of responsibility, proactively advised on building plans to ensure security and order in the commune, especially in the work of recovering weapons and explosives, and implementing the issuance of ID cards to the people. In addition, he has connected and utilized social resources to install 6 security cameras and 50 solar street lights to serve the local people”.
"The actions of Senior Lieutenant Khuat Viet Anh have become a "bridge" bringing the police force closer to the people, deeply demonstrating the motto "When the people need it, when the people are in trouble, there is the police", Lieutenant Colonel Ho Van Nhu affirmed.
