Potential risks from severely degraded suspension bridges

(NADS) - In Ba Thuoc district ( Thanh Hoa ), there are currently 10 suspension bridges serving the purpose of crossing rivers and streams. However, many of these bridges have seriously degraded, posing a danger to people and vehicles, especially during the rainy season.

In Ban Cong commune, mountainous Ba Thuoc district, three large suspension bridges connecting villages with the commune center have been seriously degraded. Local people live in anxiety every time they have to cross these bridges, as even a heavy rain can lead to unpredictable accidents.

One of the bridges of concern is the suspension bridge over Nua stream in Ba village, Ban Cong commune. With a length of 68m, a bridge surface width of 2m and a load capacity of only 0.3 tons, the bridge was built in the 1970s and is currently in a state of severe disrepair. Components such as beams, bamboo floors, cables and steel stays have rotted, becoming a danger to about 700 households in the three villages of Ba, Chieng Lau and Phat. Mr. Lo Van Tung, a resident of Phat village, Ban Cong commune, shared that every time he crosses the bridge, he has to face strong and risky shaking.

A similar situation occurred at Ta Na Kha suspension bridge in Na Kha village, Co Lung commune. Built in 2015 with a length of 49m, this bridge connects nearly 250 households to the commune center. Currently, the cables and stay wires are rusted, the welds are loose, and the wooden bridge deck is rotten, making travel extremely dangerous. Local authorities have had to barricade the bridge, preventing people from passing through.

Faced with serious degradation, the local government has taken steps to remedy the situation. Mr. Nguyen The Nghi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ban Cong Commune, said that the commune has three suspension bridges for people, including Chieng Lau Bridge, Na Tang Bridge and Ba Village Bridge. All three bridges have seriously degraded. To cope, the commune has called on people to contribute and allocate local budgets to repair and upgrade the bridges, and regularly check the safety of the bridges during the rainy season. The People's Committee of Thanh Hoa Province has also approved a project to build two new concrete bridges to replace the temporary bridges in Ba and Chieng Lau villages, with the expectation of starting construction soon. As for Na Tang Bridge, the commune is proposing to concretize it in 2025.

In Co Lung commune, according to the Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, Mr. Luong Van Kien, out of 5 suspension bridges for people, 4 are on the list of those to be invested in concrete and have started construction. However, Ta Na Kha bridge is not on the investment list for 2024 because there is a spillway nearby. However, this spillway only operates during the dry season, making people in Na Kha and Doc villages still hope for a solid bridge to ensure safety.

According to Mr. Tran Duy Tien, Head of the Economic - Infrastructure Department of the People's Committee of Ba Thuoc district, out of 10 suspension bridges for people, only 2 are still operating normally, 2 are severely damaged and 6 can be used temporarily. Currently, 4 bridges have been rebuilt with concrete, while the remaining 4 bridges have not been invested in because they are located near the permanent bridges under construction.

To ensure safety during the flood season, the district has required communes to continuously inspect and promptly repair damage to old suspension bridges. At the same time, if a bridge is found to be seriously damaged, it must immediately erect barriers to prevent vehicles and people from passing.
