Every afternoon and evening, Nguyen Van Linh Square (Pho Hien Ward) is bustling like a playground, attracting a large number of children to play. Standing out in that space is the dense presence of mini electric vehicles such as electric motorbikes, electric cars, balance bikes, electric scooters... driven by "young drivers" from 3 to 15 years old. Vehicles speeding, turning sharply, spinning 360 degrees or chasing each other have become familiar images, but also make many witnesses' hearts skip a beat.
This game became popular because of the simple form of renting a car, Electricity is easily available for only 40,000 to 60,000 VND per hour . However, the worrying thing is that most of the rental areas are located in open spaces, without protective fences, warning signs or close supervision. Children can easily drive at high speeds, rush into crowded areas or close to the edge of traffic, posing many potential risks of accidents.
Ms. Tran Thi Cuc, Pho Hien Ward, shared: My child was once hit by a 3-wheeled electric car while walking in Nguyen Van Linh Square. Luckily I caught him in time, otherwise he would have been injured. Since then, I have not dared to let him play alone, even for a few minutes.
Not only in Pho Hien ward, according to records in the area of Khoai Chau Trade Center, Viet Tien commune, the mini electric car rental service is also "blossoming". 3-4 wheel electric cars of all shapes are displayed, attracting dozens of children to jostle to rent. Within 30 minutes of being there, the reporter witnessed many collisions between the cars, even a child almost fell due to losing control.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh, Viet Tien commune, worried: I often take my children out to play, but the mini electric cars here are mostly old, homemade, high speed but the brakes are almost ineffective. I always have to remind the children to go slowly, but I am also very afraid of accidents.
According to research, most mini electric cars for children are from China, using small capacity electric motors, but the speed can reach 10 - 20 km/h. More dangerously, many car owners also arbitrarily "upgrade" the speed to increase the thrill for the player, while the braking system is old and ineffective.
Ms. NTH, who has many years of experience in the mini electric car rental business in Viet Tien commune, revealed: We buy used cars for 2-3 million VND, then repaint them, even adjust the speed to attract customers. However, the cars use batteries, so they have to be replaced constantly, otherwise they will lose power halfway.
Notably, most children driving vehicles are not equipped with any protective equipment such as helmets, elbow and knee pads. With weak reflexes, even a slight collision can lead to scratches, broken arms and legs...
In addition, many people still mistakenly think that mini electric cars are just harmless toys, but the reality shows the opposite. When improved to increase speed, these cars pose the same risks as small electric motorbikes. This becomes even more serious when children are too young to recognize and handle unexpected situations when participating in the game.
To limit the risk of insecurity, the authorities need to soon issue specific regulations, strengthen inspection of mini electric vehicle business activities, especially quality inspection, and strictly handle cases of using homemade vehicles and illegally modified vehicles. At the same time, parents need to raise their sense of responsibility and should not be subjective when letting children drive electric vehicles in public places without supervision and necessary protective equipment.
