Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang has just made a miracle by winning 2 gold medals at the Asian Swimming Championships. He excellently finished first in the men's 1,500m freestyle and 800m freestyle. Huy Hoang's double gold medal is considered the greatest success of Vietnamese swimming at a continental tournament in history, beyond the expectations of experts.
Career peak at age 25
Born in 2000 in Quang Tri , Nguyen Huy Hoang has been involved in swimming since childhood. Thanks to his innate talent and persistent training, he has gradually asserted his mettle as a leading swimmer in the region, from the 2018 Youth Olympic gold medal to the medals at the SEA Games and ASIAD.
Above all, this achievement in India can be considered the pinnacle of Huy Hoang's career up to the present time. Not only does it help satisfy his thirst for Asian achievements, the 2 gold medals also have spiritual value, demonstrating his progress in both physical strength, technique and competition tactics. In the context of strong opponents from Japan, China or Korea being absent from this tournament, he took advantage of the opportunity to make a difference with his enduring physical strength, reasonable power distribution and impressive sprinting.

After new milestones in his career, Huy Hoang certainly will not stop. In the near future, he and the Vietnamese swimming team will focus on the 33rd SEA Games later this year in Thailand. At this tournament, he is expected to continue to dominate the 400 m, 800 m and 1,500 m freestyle events. Further ahead is the 2026 ASIAD in Japan, the arena where he won a silver and bronze medal in 2018, and then a bronze medal in 2023. With his current form, the possibility of Huy Hoang changing the color of the medal is very clear.
Orientation for Vietnamese swimming
If Huy Hoang was the bright spot, the Vietnamese swimming team also had a successful Asian tournament. Winning a total of 15 medals (2 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze), the Vietnamese team ranked 4th overall.
Many young faces have asserted themselves. Among them, Vo Thi My Tien competed excellently with a series of medals in the freestyle and medley; Nguyen Kha Nhi impressed in the women's 1,500 m and 400 m events; Pham Thanh Bao continued to prove his class in the breaststroke; and Tran Hung Nguyen maintained stability in the individual medley event.
Meanwhile, the 4 x 100m mixed relay team with a combination of men and women (Nguyen - Tien - Bao - Hien) also won a bronze medal - marking an important milestone for Vietnamese swimming in the team event.
From Huy Hoang’s success, Vietnamese sports can expect to train more athletes specializing in middle and long distances. These are distances that are less competitive than short distances, where European and American athletes dominate.
According to experts, Vietnamese swimming needs a long-term strategy from management levels, such as investing in a standard swimming pool system; enhancing the discovery of young talent from local areas, especially coastal areas - where potential swimmers are always abundant. In addition, sending athletes abroad for long-term training and cooperating with leading experts is also the key to raising the level of Vietnamese swimming.
