China Vietnamese runner Nguyen Thi Oanh finished seventh in the women's 1,500m event with a time of 4 minutes 24 seconds 19.
At the Hangzhou Olympic Stadium tonight, in the first 1,000 meters, Oanh ran in the middle group, trying not to let the strongest opponents get too far. In the last 500 meters, she tried her best but could not keep up with the athletes from Bahrain, Sri Lanka and India.
Tyavi Mutile (Bahrain) finished first with a time of 4 minutes 11 seconds 65, while compatriot Yota Hirpato won bronze in 4 minutes 15 seconds 97. Indian runner Bains Harmilan won silver in 4 minutes 12 seconds 74.
Nguyen Thi Oanh (yellow shirt) competes in the women's 1,500m race at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on the evening of October 1.
Oanh's performance this time was much worse than the previous time, in Indonesia in 2018. At that time, she achieved a time of 4 minutes 15 seconds 49 to finish fourth.
In recent competitions, Oanh has done better. At the 32nd SEA Games in May, she won the gold medal in the 1,500m with a time of 4 minutes 16 seconds 85. At the Asian Championship in July, the 28-year-old runner finished fifth with a time of 4 minutes 18 seconds 84.
In August, Oanh failed to qualify for the world championships, but broke her personal record with a time of 4 minutes 12 seconds 28. If she had repeated that achievement, she could have won a silver medal at the 19th Asian Games.
Oanh will also compete in the 3,000m obstacle course tomorrow night, October 2. To defend her bronze medal, the runner from Bac Giang must at least achieve the same result as the previous Asian Games, with a time of 9 minutes 43 seconds 83. At the 2023 Asian Championship, she only achieved 10 minutes 09 seconds 62 due to poor physical condition.
Oanh is the best middle-distance runner in Southeast Asia. She participated in her first SEA Games in 2013. At the end of 2014, Oanh suffered from acute glomerulonephritis and had to stop competing for treatment, missing the 2015 SEA Games. However, after returning, she dominated the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase in the last three editions, and also holds the 3,000m steeplechase record with 9 minutes 52 seconds 44.
At the most recent SEA Games in Cambodia in May, she impressed by winning both events despite competing 20 minutes apart.
At the Asian level, in addition to the bronze medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2018 Asian Games, Oanh also won a gold medal in the 1,500m at the 2023 indoor athletics tournament.
