Restaurant causes controversy for using nude models to display food

Japan is famous for its sophisticated and refined cuisine , of which sushi is considered the most soulful and aesthetic dish. The traditional dish is made from rice combined with fresh or cooked seafood, vegetables and some spices.

Chefs then took this dish to a new level by displaying sushi on naked models, a practice known as Nyotaimori. This was popular in the 1980s, but received mixed reviews.

Recently, a dinner party in this style was held at a private club in Taichung city, Taiwan (China).

Rare images of the party were recorded and shared by a diner, showing that on the table there were many types of sushi and sashimi (Japanese name for appetizers made from raw fish and seafood). The food was displayed on the body of a nude model.

According to Taiwanese news site ETtoday , since the Covid-19 pandemic, private motels have mushroomed in Taichung City. Arranging girls to attend parties has become "almost mandatory" for private clubs to add to the atmosphere.

The customer (whose identity was not disclosed) shared that the meal was "exorbitantly expensive". Each customer had to spend more than 100,000 NTD (more than 78 million VND), of which 60,000 NTD was for the meal and 40,000 NTD was for the cost of hiring a model.

About 5 years ago, Taiwanese media (China) reported that the price to attend a similar party was about 30,000 NTD (24 million VND).

Another source revealed that the nude model at the party is an employee of an entertainment company. Meanwhile, the chef will prepare sushi and seafood sashimi.

The private club staff monitored the progress of both parties, assisted guests, and served food. The entire working time of the models lasted about 2 hours. It is known that the party attracted more than 20 guests. All guest identities were kept confidential.

The incident has caused a wave of controversy in public opinion in this country, forcing local authorities to investigate.

From a medical perspective, a Taiwanese doctor said that human skin contains many types of pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus or E. coli (the cause of diarrhea and severe intestinal infections). The human body temperature of about 36 degrees Celsius is also not suitable for protecting fresh ingredients. Food can be contaminated at any time.

A representative of the Taichung Health Bureau said that the Food Safety Bureau has not yet received any complaints from the public. However, the agency will continue to closely monitor the case. If any problems arise, they will impose penalties according to the law. If violations are discovered, the restaurant may be forced to close.

According to records, Nyotaimori originated in the Samurai era, often appearing in Geisha restaurants in Japan. It was the way Samurai celebrated victory after each battle.

Today, this type of service is controversial and banned in many countries due to public health concerns and ethical issues. China is one of the pioneering countries to ban this type of service in restaurants.
