Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen has arrived in Guatemala to strengthen ties with one of her 13 diplomatic allies.
After a military welcome ceremony and meeting with host country Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro, Ms. Tsai Ing-wen held talks with President Alejandro Giammattei.
Mr Giammattei's administration has declared Taiwan to be the “one and only true China”.
During her visit, Tsai is expected to visit the Mayan archaeological site of Tikal and the newly inaugurated National Hospital - a project funded by Taiwan with $22 million.
She will then travel to neighboring Central American country Belize and meet Prime Minister John Briceno on April 3.
On her way back to Taiwan , she is expected to stop in Los Angeles and meet with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Tsai Ing-wen's visit to Guatemala and Belize comes after Honduras became the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with the island in support of China.
