Tet music, a phrase that just by hearing it we can imagine its atmosphere: the melody is bustling, the lyrics must have family, must have banh chung, if not banh chung then there will be mai hoa hoa da
Bui Cong Nam
Therefore, Tet music is easy to make, because it already has a template; but it is also difficult to make, because if it has a template, what else can be done?
Bui Cong Nam talks about the new year by talking about the old year
Yet after many years, Bui Cong Nam, from when he first appeared in the first season of Best Song until he was noticed again with another game show, this time Anh trai vu ngan cong gai, still regularly makes Tet music.
That was surprising, but what was more surprising was that he was not out of ideas.
Since the time of What Did Last Year do about three years ago, Bui Cong Nam has found his own tone to talk about the new year. He talks about the new year by talking about the old year.
The song is still cheerful and bright, just like his musical personality from the beginning (even the image of Chi Pheo can be transformed into a more positive and optimistic version). But the lyrics are somewhat thoughtful, with a series of unanswered self-questions, contrasting with the very innocent and carefree melody.
Then last year, Nam released a whole album of Tet music, including a series of cute pop songs, both the music and the lyrics are very close to the middle class working hard at work, especially when Tet is near.
Bui Cong Nam's observations are not sharp or particularly new, they are things that everyone can see: the traffic jams on the eve of Tet ("seeing three or four extraordinary men riding together on the bus and jostling on the sidewalk"), the feeling of the rush of time, the rush of the festival, the year has passed without having time to do anything ("just ate moon cakes, the Christmas atmosphere is not over yet, oh, is a year almost over?"), the scene of working overtime, the busy pace of life, the chaos when Tet is coming and people are not prepared ("I'm over thirty and haven't had time to buy flowers, and today I haven't had time to do my nails").
Perhaps the lovely thing is that all these observations are lamentations about Tet, scenes that make people feel bored with Tet rather than love and look forward to Tet.
But, putting all those complaints into bright, cheerful melodies, people want to love all the hustle and bustle of Tet.
Tet comfort and Tet roof top
Still not giving up on Tet music, this year Bui Cong Nam has at least two Tet songs. Tet co co with Dong Nhi and Jun Pham; and Tet dinh noc with the group BOF including "talents" Jun Pham, Kay Tran, BB Tran and ST Son Thach.
If you only listen to Tet comforting , you will think that Bui Cong Nam is about to run out of ideas about Tet, when both the music and the lyrics in Tet comforting begin to fall into a rut: the joy of Tet, the comfort of Tet, the reunion during Tet.
Bui Cong Nam
But Tet Dinh Noc is a slightly more interesting piece of music, with a folk-style opening, then opening up to a familiar gentle ballad space of Bui Cong Nam, and gradually accumulating into a pop song full of energy.
Although the lyrics of Tet Dinh Noc are also somewhat... lacking in ideas, still revolving around deadlines, still revolving around putting everything aside to go home to celebrate Tet with family, there are also some reflections on the past year with all its ups and downs, joys and sorrows.
We no longer see the words of reproach for "loving" Tet like in Bui Cong Nam's previous songs, the contrast between music and lyrics disappears, making the song flatter and becoming a Tet song like many other Tet songs.
But that's okay, because there's no modern "folk song" that says: "This Tet is still the same as the old Tet/Still children still love lucky money". Tet is almost the same every year, and just because every year Tet has the same dishes and the same things doesn't mean we stop being happy about Tet. Therefore, if Tet music is repeated over and over again, that's normal.
