Pre-match review
Tomorrow morning, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will officially kick off at Hard Rock Stadium (Florida, USA) with the highlight being the opening match between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Africa's most successful club Al Ahly.
The tournament brings together 32 of the world's top teams from 6 continental confederations, divided into 8 groups. In Group A, Inter Miami and Al Ahly will compete with two formidable opponents, FC Porto (Portugal) and Palmeiras (Brazil).
Although not a familiar name to many Vietnamese fans, Al Ahly is a true monument of African football. This club holds the record with 45 Egyptian Premier League titles, along with 12 CAF Champions League titles, second only to Real Madrid (15) and Auckland City (13) in terms of continental championship titles.
This is also Al Ahly's 10th appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup, and they have finished third four times in the past decade. After being eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2024 CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns (1-1 aggregate, away goals), the team fired coach Marcel Koller and appointed Spanish strategist Jose Riveiro. The match against Inter Miami will be his official debut in the new position.
On the other side, Inter Miami is the host country USA's number one hope in this year's tournament. After only 7 years of establishment, the club owned by David Beckham has become a force in MLS, especially after the appearance of Lionel Messi, the owner of 8 Golden Balls and 3 FIFA Club World Cup championships with Barcelona.
Alongside Messi are former teammates who fought at Camp Nou such as Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, creating a dream team with a combination of experience, class and desire to conquer.
Inter Miami qualified for the Club World Cup by winning the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, setting a record points tally of 74 points after 34 matches. This season, they also advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup before falling to the Vancouver Whitecaps (1-5 over two matches).
Form, head-to-head history
Ahead of the opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Al Ahly are showing stable performance in the Egyptian national championship. This team has just extended its winning streak to 6 consecutive matches, firmly holding the top position in the domestic rankings. However, in the warm-up friendly match last weekend against Mexican representative Pachuca, Al Ahly had to accept defeat after a penalty shootout (1-1 in 90 minutes). Notably, this match took place right at Chase Stadium - the home field of opponent Inter Miami.
On the opposite side, Inter Miami is ranked 3rd in the MLS Eastern region, only 5 points behind the top and playing 1 less match. However, the recent form of coach Gerardo Martino and his team has been quite erratic, winning only 4 out of the last 12 matches in all competitions (drawing 3, losing 5). However, positive signs have returned when in the last two rounds at MLS, they both won 4-2 against CF Montreal and 5-1 against Columbus Crew, with the brilliance of Messi and the attacking stars.
Force information
Al Ahly are likely to welcome the return of midfielder Emam Ashour, who suffered a minor thigh injury before the match against Pachuca but has recovered in time.
Trezeguet, a former Aston Villa striker, returned to his boyhood club in January, ready to join strikers Taher Mohamed, Achraf Bencharki and Wessam Abou Ali.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami will be without Jordi Alba and Gonzalo Lujan due to muscle injuries. Yannick Bright, David Ruiz (hamstring injury) and goalkeeper Drake Callender (groin injury) are also doubtful.
However, goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and centre-back Tomas Aviles have returned to training and could feature against Al Ahly.
Coach Javier Mascherano is likely to stick with a 4-4-2 formation with Busquets and Cremaschi in midfield. Messi and Suarez, who have scored a combined 23 goals this season, will continue to lead the attack.
Al Ahly: El Shenawy; Hany, Rabia, Ibrahim, Debes; El Solia, Ashour, Ateya; Mohamed, Trezeguet; Abou Ali
Inter Miami: Ustari; Weigandt, Falcon, Lujan, Allen; Allende, Cremaschi, Busquets, Segovia; Messi, Suarez
Score prediction: Al Ahly 1-1 Inter Miami
