Bloomberg News reported on November 27 that Metin Topuz, a former Turkish employee of the US consulate in Istanbul, was recently released from prison. Topuz was released after serving three years in prison for supporting a terrorist organization in a case that strained US-Turkey relations.
In June 2020, a Turkish court sentenced employee Metin Topuz to eight years and nine months in prison, one of a series of developments that have put the two NATO allies at odds in recent years.
Topuz's lawyers have not yet commented on the news of Metin Topuz's release. The Turkish Foreign Ministry has also made a similar move.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the US consulate in Istanbul said: “We are aware of the news about Metin Topuz. Out of respect for the wishes of the Topuz family, we have nothing further to provide.”
In addition to Topuz's case, a Turkish court also sentenced another employee of the US diplomatic mission in Istanbul to five years in prison in October 2020 for supporting the network of cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is currently living in exile in the US. A third employee of the US consulate had previously been imprisoned for two years on terrorism charges.
