This is the 20th discharge of treated wastewater since Japan began releasing nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi power plant into the sea in August 2023, and the second in fiscal year 2026.

According to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, this discharge will last until June 19th. Approximately 7,800 tons of treated wastewater will be discharged through an underground tunnel located 1 km off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture. This wastewater has been diluted with a large amount of seawater to reduce the concentration of radioactive tritium.

According to monitoring data from the operating company and the Japanese government , tritium concentrations in seawater and seafood near the plant remain significantly lower than national safety limits and meet international safety standards.

Previously, on August 1, 2025, TEPCO announced that it had resumed the discharge of treated wastewater into the sea after a temporary suspension due to a tsunami warning. TEPCO's announcement stated that the discharge of treated water from the Advanced Liquid Treatment System (ALPS) had been temporarily suspended on the morning of July 30, 2025, as a precautionary measure following a tsunami advisory. The advisory was lifted on July 31, 2025.

After confirming that there were no abnormalities at the temporarily shut-down facilities or related parameters at the site, TEPCO resumed discharging water into the sea on the morning of August 1, 2025.

TEPCO began discharging treated wastewater in August 2023. This water was originally used to cool reactors damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster. The wastewater was then treated through an ALPS system to remove most of the radioactive substances, bringing contamination levels below regulatory limits.
