According to the tech news site The Verge, this decision is in protest against the restructuring plan of the Wikimedia Foundation – the organization that manages and operates Wikipedia. This group of volunteers currently manages the majority of English-language Wikipedia pages and has made millions of data edits.
Experts warn that if this group ceases operations en masse, Wikipedia will face significant challenges in updating information, verifying data, and maintaining content quality on a global scale.
Previously, the Wikimedia Foundation decided to disband Community Tech, a division of six software engineers dedicated to providing technical support to the global editing community. Community Tech served as a bridge between the development team and the volunteers operating the platform. This group was also responsible for maintaining many essential features such as dark mode, plagiarism detection, and handling technical issues that arose during editing.
The Wikimedia Foundation stated that the decision to dissolve had been planned since September 2025 and officially announced on May 20th. According to the foundation, Community Tech's old operating model caused delays in overall operations, therefore the group's technical tasks will be redistributed to other departments to optimize efficiency.
