Coal-fired thermal power accounts for nearly 50% of electricity output.

VietNamNetVietNamNet03/08/2023

Information from EVN said: In July 2023, the total electricity output of the system reached 26.2 billion kWh, an increase of 7.1% over the same period in 2022.

In the first 7 months, the total electricity output of the entire system reached 160.58 billion kWh, an increase of 1.9% over the same period in 2022. Coal-fired thermal power was mobilized the most, followed by hydropower, renewable energy...

Specifically, hydropower output was 36.8 billion kWh, accounting for 22.9%. "Northern lakes continue to have very poor water flow, only reaching 30-60% of the average of many years, with almost no floods," EVN informed.

Hydroelectric power plants run out of water so thermal power plants are mobilized more.

Coal-fired thermal power plants mobilized 79.95 billion kWh, accounting for 49.8%. After receiving instructions from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Industry and Trade , the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) and the Dong Bac Corporation have delivered an additional amount of coal compared to the contract, ensuring that coal-fired thermal power plants produce higher electricity output and increase inventory reserves.

Gas turbine power output was 18.01 billion kWh, accounting for 11.2%. The amount of gas supplied is still low compared to the demand for operating gas power plants (due to the decline in gas fields).

Oil-fired thermal power output was 1.23 billion kWh, accounting for 0.8%. Renewable energy was 22.11 billion kWh, accounting for 13.8% (of which solar power reached 15.48 billion kWh, wind power reached 6.06 billion kWh). Imported electricity was 2.22 billion kWh, accounting for 1.4%.

In the first 7 months of 2023, electricity production of EVN and Power Generation Corporations (including joint stock companies) reached 67.55 billion kWh, accounting for 42.07% of the total electricity production of the entire system.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in August 2023, heat waves will continue to appear interspersed with localized rain in the North. In the Central region, the heat is likely to last for the first half of the month, with possible days of intense heat; the Central Highlands and the South will experience many days of showers and thunderstorms. The average temperature across the country is generally 0.5-1 degrees Celsius higher than the average for the same period in many years.

In August 2023, the average daily electricity consumption of the entire system is expected to be 825.8 million kWh/day, an increase of 7.3% over the same period in 2022. The electricity supply situation in August is expected to continue to be guaranteed.

Regarding hydropower, EVN said that it has entered the main flood season, so it is necessary to forecast and closely monitor water flow to hydropower reservoirs to have flexible exploitation strategies by day.

For coal-fired thermal power and gas turbines, EVN calculates the mobilization in accordance with the water situation in hydropower reservoirs during the main flood season, avoiding excess discharge; however, it is necessary to prepare coal-fired thermal power and gas turbine units for high mobilization in case of need to store water early. Ensure reserve of oil-fired thermal power to be ready for mobilization in case of need.

To reduce difficulties in operating the power system, EVN still calls for saving during peak noon hours (from 11:30 to 14:30) and peak evening hours (from 20:00 to 22:00); at the same time, people are advised to use air conditioners reasonably (set at 26-27 degrees or higher, combined with fans) and should not use many high-capacity electrical devices at the same time.
