What makes this situation confusing is that while these videos and songs still appear in search results, home feeds, and playlists for each account, users cannot view or listen to the content from them. Clicking on the links results in an error message, creating a sense of frustration for music lovers.
According to Android Authority, the issue stems from a licensing dispute between YouTube and the Society of European Theatre Authors and Composers (SESAC). In a statement, the YouTube team said: “Our music licensing agreement with SESAC has expired without reaching the terms of renewal, despite our best efforts. As a result, we need to block certain music content on YouTube in the US.”
Many popular music videos were suddenly removed from YouTube.
SESAC is an influential organization in the music industry that represents the interests of songwriters and publishers. It not only protects the interests of artists, but also provides a common licensing agreement for businesses, helping them save on public performance costs.
Currently, SESAC represents top artists such as Adele, REM, Ariana Grande and Kesha, and has over 1.5 million songs in its catalog.
The failure to renew the agreement between YouTube and SESAC has resulted in songs by popular artists like Adele and Nirvana disappearing from search results on the video platform entirely. However, this appears to be inconsistent, with some songs by other artists like Kesha still accessible.
Not only does this disrupt the user experience, it also raises questions about music copyright management on online platforms. It highlights the importance of copyright compliance in the music industry and how platforms like YouTube face challenges related to licensing and copyright.
