On July 9th, the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) received a proposal from seven V-League clubs requesting amendments to the regulations regarding the use of foreign players. These teams wish to maximize the use of foreign players at all times on the field.
VPF will compile the opinions and report them to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) for consideration and guidance as soon as possible. The results will be announced before the V-League 2025-2026 draw on July 14th.
The VFF's decision will also have a significant impact on the development of Vietnamese football in the future. Adding more foreign players will boost the professionalism of the domestic league, but it also has side effects. Because adding one more foreign player on the field means taking away playing opportunities from one domestic player.
In March of this year, the 8th meeting of the VFF Executive Committee for the 2022-2026 term introduced changes to the regulations on the use of foreign players, increasing the number of foreign players registered in a match to 4, but only allowing a maximum of 3 to be used in a single match.
Previously, from 2013 until now, VPF has maintained the regulation that allows a maximum of 3 foreign players to be registered per match.
This is not the first time the V-League has changed its regulations regarding the use of foreign players since the Vietnamese national championship became professional. 2000 was the first year V-League teams hired foreign players, with each team allowed to register 5 foreign players per match.
From 2001 to 2002, there were 7 foreign players registered, but this number decreased to 4 in 2003. From 2005 to 2010, the maximum number of foreign players was maintained at 5. In the 2011 season, the number of registered foreign players decreased again to 4.
The 2025-2026 Vietnamese football season will begin on August 9th with the National Super Cup match between Nam Dinh and Hanoi Police. The V-League will kick off on August 15th, while the First Division will start on September 19th.
