Many cargo ships are waiting for the passage through the Strait of Hormuz to be cleared.

According to Bloomberg, more than 800 ships, including many oil and fuel tankers, remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, while many others are anchored outside, bringing the total number of ships waiting at both ends of the Strait of Hormuz to over 1,000. Although Iran has allowed the resumption of shipping within two weeks under certain conditions, the number of ships passing through the strait has not shown any significant improvement.

Shipping companies say they are awaiting further details on the ceasefire agreement before resuming vessel operations. Many companies are contacting insurance and security consultants and placing ships on standby.

In this context, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) stated that it is urgently coordinating with relevant parties to establish a mechanism to ensure "transit security" through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized that he had begun working with relevant parties to implement a suitable mechanism to ensure the safe passage of ships through this strategic shipping lane.

According to him, the immediate priority is to maintain maritime safety while organizing necessary evacuation operations under secure conditions.

The Strait of Hormuz – through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes – plays a particularly important role in global energy security.

However, this shipping route has been almost completely paralyzed since the conflict broke out on February 28, raising concerns about disruptions to energy supply chains and increased risks to international maritime operations.
