Air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv and multiple explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital at around 11am on May 29. The attack came after Kyiv was heavily bombarded overnight and Ukraine claimed to have destroyed 67 of 75 aerial targets, including cruise missiles and Iranian-made Shaded suicide drones.

Explosion in the sky over Kyiv at night

The Ukrainian Air Force announced on the morning of May 29 that its air defense forces had shot down 30 UAVs and 37 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, according to The Kyiv Independent . Meanwhile, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat said Russia may have used Iskander missiles and S-300, S-400 for the attack.

AFP quoted Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny as saying that Russia launched 11 Iskander missiles in the attack at 11:00 a.m. on May 29 and all were intercepted by Ukraine.

Russia has not commented on the above information.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said after the 11am attack that burning rocket fragments had fallen on a street in the Obolonsky district. Firefighters were called in to deal with the situation. In the Podilsky district, rocket fragments set fire to the roof of a two-storey building and injured one person, who was taken to hospital.

A house in Kyiv burned down in the attack on the morning of May 29.

Explosions were also recorded in the Desnyanskyi district while air defense systems were activated. At the same time, sirens sounded across northern, central and southern Ukraine.

Reuters quoted witnesses in Kyiv as saying they saw many people initially appearing indifferent to the sirens but then panicking and running for cover when the explosions occurred.

In Khmelnytskyi province in western Ukraine, explosions occurred at a military facility and the provincial leader said five planes were damaged, while the runway was being repaired.

On May 27, Kyiv suffered the largest UAV attack since the conflict broke out in February 2022.

Russia accuses Ukraine of shelling territory near the border

Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Russia’s Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, accused Kyiv forces on May 29 of shelling several border settlements. Gladkov said two industrial facilities in the town of Shebekino were hit and four workers were injured. Power was cut off in several areas.

Reporter Francis Scarr posted a video on May 29 broadcast by Russian television in which Mr. Gladkov called for the annexation of Ukraine's Kharkiv province into Belgorod to help stabilize the border and "that is the best way to solve the problem of shelling Belgorod".

Ukraine has not commented on the reports. Russia has previously accused Ukraine of being behind recent raids on several villages in Belgorod, but Kyiv said they were the work of Russian guerrilla groups.

Ukraine will attack soon

Ukraine's land forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi visited troops near the eastern city of Lyman and said that Ukraine would soon take offensive action against Russian troops, according to CNN.

"I met with the commanders of the units that are performing tasks at the most hot spots on the front line. We discussed potential developments in the region and the current situation on the front line. I noted that the time is approaching for us to launch active offensive actions and set specific tasks to prepare for it," Syrskyi announced on Telegram on May 29.

Last weekend, Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny said "it's time to take back what belongs to us", suggesting that Ukraine is about to launch a major counter-offensive.

Gaps in arms control

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on May 29 that a gap had appeared in the field of arms control due to bad relations between countries, according to TASS.

“A huge void has emerged in the field of arms control and strategic stability and in theory should be urgently filled with new actions under international law to manage the situation,” Peskov said.

The official said the issue was in the interest of the entire world and that the countries involved needed to restore a working relationship, “which is lacking at the moment.” He also said that this was not Russia’s fault.

Mr Peskov's comments came in connection with Russia's withdrawal from the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty. The 1990 pact limits the deployment of military hardware in Europe. According to Reuters, Russia suspended its participation in 2007 and withdrew completely in 2015. This month, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree condemning the treaty after debate and a vote in the Russian parliament.
