25 years of “Once Upon a Time”

Summer 2025, Idecaf Theater introduces the program Once Upon a Time 36 with the story Descendants of the Sun God (author: Quang Thao, director: Dinh Toan) with the participation of 70 artists and actors: Meritorious Artist Bach Long, Meritorious Artist My Duyen, Meritorious Artist Dai Nghia, artists Thanh Thuy, Hoang Trinh, Dinh Toan, Hong Anh, Quang Thao, Quoc Thinh, Tuyen Map...

Enjoying the play, the audience will feel the cultural beauty and the special presence of gods in the lives of Korean people. In particular, the play cleverly exploits the depth of family affection, creating many emotions for the audience. Besides, the basic criteria of the Once Upon a Time programs are still maintained, aiming at truth, goodness and beauty, the meaning of the law of cause and effect: bad people will be destroyed, eliminated, good people will live happily...

The program was invested meticulously, with more than 100 completely new costumes alone. The program's production unit also printed photo books (according to Disney's photo book standards, size 24x33cm) to give to the audience. Production director - director Huynh Anh Tuan shared: "Every summer, we try to make a decent, thoughtful, grandiose, mythological art program... for children. This is also to confirm that drama is not only performed and exists on small stages, but can be invested in and performed on a large scale. This summer, many stages in Ho Chi Minh City invested in children's drama, which is a great effort of those in the profession; although there is competition, it is a positive signal, very happy."

Talking about the life of the children's stage, Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan also shared many thoughts. According to him, cultural and artistic activities not only meet the entertainment needs but also have a great impact on the development of thinking, intelligence and spirit of children. In many countries in the region and the world , there have been specific policies on investing in cultural arts for all ages, such as: starting from 3-year-old children in preschool with puppetry, followed by children's drama for primary school age, historical drama for secondary school age... "Artists and artists in the country in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular are making efforts to bring more and more good and meaningful works to children, but the strength of units and individuals is limited. The State needs to have support policies, families and schools join hands to create conditions for children to come to art... then the overall strength from activities to nurture children's souls with stage arts will be promoted better, much more effectively", Production Director - Director Huynh Anh Tuan shared.

Besides Idecaf Theater, some drama stages in Ho Chi Minh City also enthusiastically launched new plays, meeting the entertainment needs of young audiences.

This summer, the children's stage project Fairy Tales by artist Minh Nhi introduces the play Big Nose Princess and Meo Meo Kingdom (author: Vo Tin, director: Chanh Truc). The play is staged with cheerful and bright colors, sending a message about bad habits, which is lying. Although the investment is large-scale with more than 60 actors, costumes, scenery, and music are all renewed, but according to artist Minh Nhi, the ticket price remains the same as every year so that young audiences can easily access the work.

The 5B Small Stage Drama Theater is also completing the final script editing to prepare for the rehearsal of a new children's play this summer. According to People's Artist My Uyen, the play has not yet been named, but preparations have been completed, ready for its premiere in mid-June. "This will be a musical with both magic and circus performances, meeting the diverse entertainment needs of the audience, increasing interaction, helping children to be bolder and more confident in communication, and to freely play and entertain themselves in the children's theater space," People's Artist My Uyen revealed.

Although there are no new plays to welcome the summer, Ban Mai Stage (at Ho Chi Minh City Children's House, 36 Le Quy Don Street, District 3) still has many plans to serve. Director Bao Chu, Director of Ban Mai Stage, shared: "This summer, the stage is still lit up regularly with 5 plays that have been released including: Colora - The Glorious Land, Penny - O Me Ly, Rango - The First Journey, Tet Oh Tet, Mid-Autumn Festival.

Quoc Thao Stage (at Phu Nhuan District Cultural Center) said that the unit has completed the children's play Na Tra Dai Noi Long Cung to serve children this summer. The play will light up the first performance on International Children's Day, June 1.

The colorful children's stage plays that continuously light up to serve the audience in the summer of 2025 are an encouraging signal, and at the same time demonstrate the constant efforts of the city's artists, aiming to bring children useful entertainment hours, helping them cultivate aesthetic thinking, and feel many valuableeducational stories from good plays.

In the summer of 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet, Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will perform the ballet Cinderella, inspired by the work of French writer Charles Perrault, music by the great Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, choreographer Nguyen Phuc Hung.
